To celebrate my having time, it not raining, it not being baltic cold but for a change actually being wuite a nice day I decided to change the brake fluid in the saab as the pedal felt a bit gash. There's plenty of power if you give it a foot full, but not a lot of feel.

Plenty of meat left on the front pads and disks look almost new* as well.

Old fluid doesn't look too bad.

I pumped down the master cylinder as far as I dared, then topped up and pumped until each corner pushed clear.

Hopefully will improve braking a bit. Also I found a loose ish pipe coming from the servo - it connects to a round thing seemingly on the end of the exhaust cam, but wasn't connecting very well. I thought i'd taken photos, but apparently not.  I smeared it with grease and refitted, but it was still all a bit loose and wibbly wobbly. Could this cause a drop in servo effectiveness does anyone know? It runs from the servo, T's to the inlet manifold and also to this gubbins off the side of the rocker cover.

you can just see it peeking cheekily below, in this stock photo.

I also discovered while refitting the grill with something more sturdy than the shite plastic clips that it has aircon. It doesn't work and I kinda always assumed it wasn't fitted. But it quite clearly is.

Any guesses why thats broken then?

Probably no gas- check condenser radiator for leakage/stone damage, you can put 12v to the compressor to see if the aircon clutch kicks in. Saab aircon should be FREEZING. Pipe from servo should be leak free, otherwise you won't get much assistance- could be a vacuum octopus thingy to distribute vacuum to the servo/heater flaps etc.

I played Aircon roulette with the meriva since it never really worked, went to kwikfit as if it doesn't get cold, you don't pay.

I lost the gamble. It went ice cold and still is, was out of gas. Had to pay £50. We got it done on the hottest day of last summer, was almost worth £50 to sit under the air con at kwikfit and drink all their coffee...

Well, been out in it this morning and the brakes are definately a good bit better. Which is nice. Although still a long way from what you'd call sharp, keen or eager.

But definitly better.

not sure what the thing is on exhaust cam,if it were diesel id say vaccum pump,i think if your losing vaccum on that pipe from inlet surely pedal would be harder than normal if nothings hissing when running it should be ok,i would check brakes are free front and rear also ive known rubber pipes perish and close up under vaccum it shouldn't have them, and use solid pipe, but you never know if someones changed it at

some point

Found the photos!

So the pipe in question is hard plastic and is this one following the air intake.

Which I know know runs from the servo to a T, and from the T to both the intake manifold and the cam driven vac pump (cheers Phill. It was bothering me that I didn't know what that was.)

The end at the vac pump was loose as, and it came apart with almost no effort. Was / Is all rattling around a bit

As said, I greased it and put it back together as well as I could (but no ptfe tape or owt)

But although the brakes have improved, they're still far from what I would expect on such a premium luxuary executive transport.  (Although there is plenty of power there, just the feel is shit.) so I could well believe that little fitting is leaking. Fuck knows if that is available etc. Will look into that later.

I also discovered that when I changed the atf at last service I may have got a little carried away with the filling part of the operation.

That won't have ruined it will it? I had noticed the changes were not as sharp as I'd hoped after the change. That'll be me fecking it up then.  :-D  Work to your strengths. that's what I say. It's due an oil service, so I'll do the box again then and pay a bit more attention.

9-5 brakes don't feel brilliant . I put aero caliper carriers and discs on mine which made it better but not fantastic . Prob too used to overservod modern shit

Check your pollen filter and fuse, the fuse blows if the pollen filter is blocked....

The saab as been a sweaty little fustbox since we got it, so have started to look at the heating controls in an attempt to get it less enthusiastic all the time.

Found this spiffing guide on the tinternet, http://www.thesaabsite.com/faqfiles/Blend-Door-Replacement-Both-Sides-PDF.1287.1.pdf

and following its clear and concise instructions discovered the car was throwing fault codes for the left hand blend door. hurrah.

Start to demolish the dash, which happily is entirely made with only 2 types of screw. A lot of them, but only 2 types.

The pollen filter was located and removed, and may well have been the original. That won't help.

Then more digging, and tadaaa, broke stuff.

Heater blend door arm is broken, and there are missing teeth on cogs, and looking at the internet they all do this sir. Flaps made of cheese.

Anyone breaking a 9-5?

Posted

Best replace that with an aluminum arm, a used one will be the same age and just as brittle. Had similar issues with my 9-5, but it was jsut the blend door motor shaft was shafted. A thump on the kerb and it is sorted. I had no aircon either, kwik fit gassed it for me and now it's freezing, but only worth doing after the heating system is sorted, otherwise it'll still blow hot air.
