2001 Peugeot 406 estate hdi £450

I've decided to list up my 406. It's a Y reg hdi estate with the 90bhp 2.0 engine.

It's been a reliable car for me, starts first time, gets to 90 degrees and stays there. Suspension is ok apart from the front o/s top mount will need changing at some point.

Loads of space being the estate and comes with a tow bar. Rear load cover included.

It has MOT to Dec 2016. Just had 4 x new Uniroyal Rainsport 3 tyres fitted. Comes with oil and fuel filter which I will change this weekend. Air filter has been done.

Being the GLX it has stereo controls on a separate stalk. The info display has some pixel damage but works. Needs a remote control and disc to work the built in Sat nav although I don't think it would be up to much cop! Electrically adjustable front seats.

All electrics work. I have two standard keys so central locking is operated by the door lock. I don't have a remote key to try it.

Gearchange is fine. Clutch bites high but apparently they are often like that. No slippage.

Good on fuel. I get over 40 doing short journeys so probably 45+ on a run.

The car came with no history so I would change the timing belt for peace of mind. The aux belt needs doing soon.

It has cost me over £600 to date but with a shiter's discount I'm after £450. I only have one photo which i'll upload later. I'll take some more if any interest.

Would make someone a good runaround and no dmf to go wrong either. PM me if interested.

Will add that both the exterior and interior are in good nick. There's been some sealant to the drivers side sill at the top. Not sure what for though. Maybe to stick a plastic strip on or something. Some paint peel from the b pillar but otherwise clean and tidy.

The reason I'm selling is that I can't get comfy in the driver's seat. It might be me though as my mate borrowed it and had no problems. Also, I seem to have caught an Autoshite condition that means my chod needs to keep churning. I was perfectly normal before I joined this site.

Thanks for the bump outlaw! Hope you're enjoying the Alfa.

As it looks like this may be around for a while i've bought an auxiliary belt and I'm having a go at changing it myself tomorrow. This may not be the biggest job ever completed on a car but for me so far it is. I've given myself the whole day to do it. For a timing belt i'd probably have to book a week off work!

Watch your fingers!!! I've done a few and some of them it's extremely difficult with the tensioner retracted to slip the belt on. Sometimes your as well putting it on the pulleys then of them with the idler retracted ease it on to one of the others by way of a screwdriver.

Do you mean sometimes it's easier to prise it on with a screwdriver rather than release the tensioner? Will make more sense tomorrow I think but thanks for the advice.

You can use an allen key to peg the auto tensioner back, the bolt on it is 16mm and you'll need either a long spanner or two spanners hooked together.

No keep the tensioner retracted then as you are letting it off ease it onto the pulley that's easiest to drive the belt onto with the jemmy or whatever you are using. The focus for example has a rounded off pulley for the aircon, where you can ease it onto easily with the tensioner back. Usually a offset spanner is best for these jobs.

Auxiliary belt now changed! Great sense of satisfaction. I did it by retracting the tensioner as far as possible and then using a large spanner to hold the smaller 15mm spanner as far back as possible. Maybe a bit unorthodox but it worked. Slipped the new belt on and it's working fine! The tensioner seems to do it's job ok and I managed to get a bit of white grease in the pulley. I noticed a bit of play in the diesel pump pulley but not excessive. Also, filed away a sharp edge on the alternator pulley.

I'm taking it off sale for the moment. I'll see if I can do anything with the seat. Maybe try taking it apart or look for another one. Will run it over the winter and see how I get on with it.
