The Ubiquitous Mk4 Golf

My wife had a 1.6se in a lurid green. It was brilliant, they won't set the world on fire but it just went on and on and on. Interior is dark but well put together and not made out of leftover poundshop displays like a ford or French of the era. Quick enough not to be embarrassing but not enough to get the other half into trouble. I would happily have another tomorrow.

See loads of these kicking about sometimes looking a bit rough round the edges, I forget they're kicking on for 15/16 years old.

The sis in law has a 1.6 badermatic, and it has been the most unreliable sack of shit she has ever owned, and at one point she owned a Yugo 45! When it does break, it is always a several hundred quid job to sort, and the fucking thing is worth buttons. It's shat it's gearbox ECU twice in the years she's owned it. It's also coma inducingly boring to drive, and is seriously heavy on juice

Work have just bought two of these for shuttle duties. I find they are decent to rag about in but we are talking 30 minutes behind the wheel tops, they are mostly forgettable afterwards.

Driven by junkies, jakeys, deadbeats, blind people, toothless halfwits and washed up yuppies.

My father had a V5 version which was surprising economical and it never put a foot wrong in the couple of years he had the car then he gave it to my sister in law who I doubt has opened the bonnet in her couple of years of ownership.

So on that basis if any car can survive her abuse it's got to be a decent car as not much can put up with her driving and lack of care.

I've also had the new Beetle and an A3 which are all based on the same platform and again all have had bullet proof mechanicals and if I could be critical maybe the rear suspension isn't that refined as say a focus when you hit a pothole but it makes up for that by not being a complete rot box and keep an eye on rear washer pipes coming disconnected as I had that on both the A3 and the golf when we first got them but it's an easy and free fix to sort out.
