Subaru - what to do

My 1995 Subaru Legacy estate gives me a bit of a quandary. It's great on many levels - swift, quiet and pretty good fun to hustle, even if the steering has all the feel of a playstation controller. When I can't be arsed with one of my older cars (well, the 2CV is not really a motorway machine and the salt is mucking it up a treat this time of year) it's ideal. Starts on the button, has a good heater and being an estate, it's super-practical too.

However, it's also a Nineties slab of J-Tin which means it's about as interesting as flour. It looks about as exciting as pavement too.

I've got my Rover 2000 available to hit the motorway button (passed it's MoT on Friday - hoorah!) but it's a minter underneath, so not really ideal for daily abuse.

So, I probably should keep the Subaru. Especially as I've just paid out loads for a service and four tyres.

But it's dull! I hate driving a car that doesn't get noticed. So, I'm pondering doing something daft. Like brush painting it orange or something (maybe even with Viper stripes!). Or maybe a hippy collage.

So, hould I forget it, leave it as it is, flog it in the summer and buy another shitter for next Winter or should I just go mad with a brush? I've never painted a car before and I've got a real urge to do it.

Here's the blandmobile...

Hmmm, maybe needs some paint in here too!

Trundle around in the Subaru until they stop putting salt on the roads, and then start using the Rover. Then keep the Subaru as a track day car - they're surprisingly good.

Leave it as it is, even with a splash of 'crazee' paint, its still going to be a bland drive, plus if you do get really bored of it with it, looking tidy you can always flog it for probably what you paid for it.Will keep the Rozzers off your back also, nowt like a 'Zany' car to attract the 5-0.

Yeah, you'll just end up looking like some zany charity rally rejectBland or not, I like these a lot. I would find one extremely useful apart from the thirsty flat-4.

Excellent. Sounds like a plan! I love the way the engine picks up beyond 4000rpm so maybe a track/thrash machine is the best way!

I'd say keep it too. Much too useful to get shot of, even if you find it dull.

It's not that thirsty really. It's only a two-litre but when I drove it to France (at a fully legal 81mph for much of the French side) fully loaded with a boot full of crap, it still did 29mpg. Struggles to do better, but when I do the sums, it rarely does worse!Plus the low ratio box is great around town. Maybe I should just accept the fact that sometimes, a car really is just a tool to get from A to B.

Essentially, that's all a car is! Besides, why ruin what is effect a decent looking motor? Keep as is and flog to an old giffer. You'll be quids in! :)

Ok, fear not. I'll put the brush away! Might still use it on the 2CV at some point mind...After all - it's probably bordering shite now. If I keep it a few years, it'll be definite shite! (though I might have to stop the front wings rusting off if I'm keeping it that long...)

Has it got a good strong heater? Thats no.1 priority for transport at the moment IMO. If so hang on to it and enjoy ambling to work in the warm, lovely job.

Oh yeah. Super heater. One reason it's been getting more use than the 2CV lately! 4WD came in useful during the snow too. Not sure that really justifies a 4x4 but at least environmentalists are unlikely to pick on it because it doesn't really have the off road stance.Maybe I should just make a few more cassette compilations and stop whinging.

Leave it alone, in terms of looks those Legacys are ace, the sportier ones look super-cool, probably one of my favourite 90s car designs.

See? Lovely. I especially like the roof bars.

Yeah, sporty ones do look nice (I actually got waved at by a bloke in an imported one the other day!) but I think mine just looks horribly bland. Not unpleasant, but a bit too much Suzuki Baleno.Oddly, my first proper motor in Gran Turismo 1 was a Legacy estate. If only money was as easily raised in real life. I'd soon chuck a pair of turbos on the engine, slam it and go racing! (Wonder if I'd crash less in real life...)

That does look cool but it reminds me how I'd love a Legnum even more! 8)
