A little help required with a chassis number.....

Hi all,

I am currently in the middle of a rant inducing meltdown courtesy of the DVLA, and it's getting to the point where i'm losing the will to live.

basically, i bought the green ranger back in the early part of september, and sent off a V62 to get a V5©, as the elderly lady couldn't find it (the car belonged to her deceased husband).  i told her she may get a letter addressed to him, just in case it turning up out of the blue upset her, and she was more than happy to deal with it.

so, some six weeks later, no V5©.  i called them, and ive been told that the chassis number doesn't match the one on their records, and they will send me a letter telling me what to do.  this could take up to 10 days to arrive, and then i have to write back, etc etc.  at this rate, i dont see me being able to get the car taxed in time for my trial in January!  she wouldn't tell me whther i was one digit out due to a mistake, or whether it was totally different.  i cant sort it online, i cant talk to the case handler on the phone to discuss it, and i cant see anyone in person!  i'm going nuts!

anyway, what I am wondering is this - is there another way to see what chassis number they hold on record, so i can see where i've gone wrong, and possibly speed the process up? i'm going to pop the bonnet and get some pictures of the VIN plate tonight when i get home, but it'd be great if i had something to compare it to, to see whether ive got the wrong info, or the DVLA do! as if their info is wrong, i'm looking at a right nightmare!

any thoughts/ideas would be greatly appreciated 8)

P.S. - this is genuinely nothing hookey, i just cant stand the DVLAs rubbish approach to everything, and i want to get this car back on the road asap so i can go and climb some hills after xmas.

just to add, if someone knows how to access data, but doesnt want to divulge it, i can post a pic of the vin plate for them to compare with what they have and let me know whats what?

just thinking out loud....

What sometimes happens it that chassis numbers are entered in ye olden days.

I got one of my old Volvos MOT'd, then received a letter about the mis-match of the VIN recorded by the MOT and the VIN number number on the vehicle record. This was because the number on the record was just the last six digits (the serial number), rather than the whole shooting match prefixed 17-digit VIN. Now it's blinding obvious to me or you that the number has been truncated and the last bit matches, but the computer is dumb enough not to know that. All was corrected and a new V5C issued with the new details by sending a picture and letter and was relatively hassle-free.

So did you actually send them the wrong number, or was it a case of them having the wrong number and you sending the right one?

well, the car in question is a kit car that has retained its donor registration.  all above board and correctly registered etc etc.

the previous owner, for reasons unknown, has riveted the original vin plate back on to the 'new' kit car.  because of this, i (incorrectly) assumed that this was the recorded chassis number for the car.  according to the details on the link thingy i posted earlier, the chassis number is down as the kit manufacturers chassis number.

in short - on the V5© it must say - Make: rickman ranger, Reg: <donor registration>, VIN: <new chassis number>.

i put on the form Make: rickman ranger, Reg: <donor registration>, VIN: <donor chassis number>

and it has flagged up as wrong i guess.

oh well, hopefully that will fix the issue.  I'll let you all know........

Thanks for clearing that up. Hopefully they'll get their fingers out and get your papers out pronto.
