Any Xantia enthusiasts about? Wee question...

Nothing big (or indeed interesting, before you flame me Monsieur Bolleaux), but just wondering if any other Xantia heads have had a wee buzzing noise on the dash?  I kinda reckon it's the same wee mini fan as i had on the 405s.  The one that gauges the temperature i think?

The aircon dusnae work, and when I press the button no light comes on or any other indication that it works...

This, naturally on a french car of an age is neither a surprise nor a concern, but still, just wondered!

Cheerzzz

Here's a picture of a horse lying down.

It's just the little motor that brings air in to monitor temperature. IIRC it's a little grille in a button space?

The xm had this, but it sat up top in the light cluster in the headlight.

I took it out, sprayed it clean with switch cleaner, then put a drop of oil on the moving parts. Was silent after that, and did its job alot better.

I never used the auto temp though as I always have the window open, rain, sun or snow, and it made it go nuts and put the fans on full whack until i switched it back to manual. Could always find it, unplug it and see if the noise stops? Mine was very filthy, full of dust and crap.

Ah cheers guys.  Will sort that tomozzers then!  Yeah havenae quite figured out the auto temp yet - it seems to do it's own thing and we dinnae bother each other too much.  Have to see about the aircon, just in the interests of being anal and having everything working.  Or maybe I won't.

Don't fix things on a Xantia, it just moves the fault into other components.  If you can live without AC then do.

Saabs have the annoying little fan too . Blast out with airline and a squirt of wd!

This. Youll get it icy cold then the accumulator will piss itself, or a headlight will fail but the bulb will be fine...

I took all the spheres off mine to test them and they were fine. 3 weeks later the exhaust clamp broke. Coincidence? I think not...

Not only that, the faults get ever more complex and difficult to diagnose!  If we'd not tightened the wheel nuts up properly on collection day I daresay none of the problems Chompy and I had with the Xantia afterwards would ever have occured.

I think that every time i look at my front wing on the zx! But then i wouldnt have known about the shitty front brake discs, so swings and roundabouts...

Cheers guys, can see a lot of sense in all your replies. It's weird though - bar the AC, everything works, and it's smooth and brilliant. The weird part being that I'm living in fear! Feels too good to be true - or maybe I got a 'good one'. The full service/repair history is mad though - soooo much money spent on servicing and upkeep. Maybe it paid off!

It's making me want an XM now. I'm very worried about my continuing predilection for older French cars. Not a sensible move for a skint twat. In truth I should probably be driving an Almera or something equally bland and reliable.

They're boring as ballicks though. :)

Am expecting an HBOL soon. Sounds like I should just tape it shut when I get it!

My xm did the bulb thing, the one in the rh computer display used to go awol, as did the fuel guage. A smack fixed them both for a while

Nice one Chompy, yeah will check the fuse at some point, but aye, ac is mostly irrelevant for me. I grew up in N. Ireland in the 70s and my Dad was skint. So I have all the right history of cars. And now of course want to own all the ones he did. Might be a mad leap from a Xantia to a Hillman Hunter though! All the other stuff works fine apart from the rev counter, which occasionally works fine, but then has an emergency lie-down at other times. It's so far the best motor I've had. Even though I got spoilt with 405 handling..

I really do miss the intense blueness of the 323 interior though.
