Lethal keyless ignition...

I just downloaded a random BMW user manual and it clearly states not to leave the car running in enclosed areas due to carbon monoxide.

It also clearly states to switch the car off using the stop button.

Not sure what else they are expected to do other than not sell a car to people until they have signed a form saying that they have read the manual.

Is that not what they do with software and fridges and whatnot? Give them something to sign that they won't read so that when the inevitable occurs and they run themselves over, it can be unearthed from some cabinet and stapled to them for future reference.

No wonder the human race is doomed.

I really don't get the advantage of keyless aside from giving you ammo in top trumps games with fellow company car drivers.

You need to have this 'thing' to make the car go. This 'thing' is also useful to gain entry either from a distance or close up. Once in the car car you need somewhere to put the 'thing' while driving where it can be easily found when you stop driving. In the old days the 'thing' a key and while driving it was stored in a keyhole.

A further development on the key hole was when manufacturers adapted the keyhole to contain a lock which you turned to operate a switch before pushing the 'start' button. Things improved further when this switch was developed further to incorporate a further switch to operate the starter. At last the stater button could be got rid of.......and all it took to stop the thing was for the driver to turn the key to off.

Because why have a key switch when you can have an incredibly complex system of electronics to do the same job that adds another 5kg to the cars weight, another 50 meters or so of wiring and that will be completely unrepairable at the roadside or even in a garage without the proper diagnostic equipment?

We are literally going back to the days of cars being scrapped at under ten years old, but its no longer due to rust but shite like this just not being worth fixing.

See also.... touch screen heater controls, electric handbrakes, DSG gearboxes and basically everything introduced after about 1997 which seems to be roughly the point where tech and comfort reached its peak without going too silly.

"Mazda New Zealand general manager Glenn Harris said, whilst trying to stifle laughter, that the report of the couple being trapped in the car in that manner was an industry first".

Fucking morons.

Exactly - much as I usually hate to chirp up for big corperations, as far as I'm concerned, the company has done its part, they have given you the information, if you do not choose to read it then it's your problem/responsibility, seriously, what are you? Five years old? Does everything need to be explained in detail to you? (Clearly, if you're American or a money-grabbing lawyer - yes).

In fairness.....

Jo (the not a girlfriend) has a piece of shit Renault Clio with keyless and auto stop and she pulled up the other day and it auto stopped. she was busy trying to collect all the bits and pieces that are part of a modern womans life (mobile phones of which she has three! Dog, leads, handbag, coat etc) and it was only as she was actually getting out of the car did I suggest she turn the fucker off. She was really confused as it was off, but it wasn't if you know what I mean. I could understand how easy it was to forget. I really don't understand why manufacturers have not made cars turn themselves off when the 'key' is a reasonable distance from the car. I'm sure there's a good reason, I'm just not aware of it.

Some folk fail to realize that it is possible to unlock the car by using the handle on the door....

Mazda New Zealand general manager Glenn Harris said the report of the couple being trapped in the car in that manner was an industry first.

I think that, having established what was actually taking place, I would have left them to it, pausing only to ensure they wouldn't be found.

Callous? Maybe, but there are others far more worthy of precious oxygen than those folks.
