Since I'll be on my billy with nowt else to do perhaps I will take some pics of a base spec Volvo estate in the most ordinary graphite grey at an average petrol station somewhere on the M5. This place...

If I'd seen this before, I'd have recommended a Chrysler Voyager Limited XS, 2002-4 3.3V6.

Why? Because I drove mine for several thousand miles with my right leg in a cast from toes to knee, using my left foot for pedals. It returned 32mpg on motorways at 80, 25 around town, had powered doors and tailgate, and was extremely easy to get in when walking on crutches or using a wheelchair. The latter, I could wheel up to the car, push tailgate button, get out, fold chair, tie to back of third row then hop around to the front leaning on the car whilst letting the tailgate close. Of more use, when I got IN the wheelchair I could close the tailgate, whereas otherwise I'd be trying to stand up etc. to pull it shut.

The powered doors also worked well - when I had a pegleg thing because I simply cannot be doing with 'rest' or 'crutches', I could walk up to the car opening the side door on approach, get in the driver's seat, unstrap the leg and throw it around the B-pillar into the back then press the console button to close the door.

Easy to work on once you've got your head around the scuttle really just being a bloody annoying bonnet. "To change the spark plugs, first, remove the wiper blades".

They're also very, very comfortable and relaxing for long drives. I felt a complete wally driving an 8-seater minivan with just me in it though, seemed just... wasteful - so I traded it in for a 2.25 tonne 5.7 V8 which was 6 inches longer, and wider, and used more fuel, and didn't feel silly at all driving it alone.

Thanks for the tip. I did think about a Chrysler Voyager but the soon to be wife wants kids while I'm trying to put them off for as long as possible and I thought an MPV would send the wrong message.

I'm not a total invalid just accumulated numerous injuries over the years that give me jip on long motorway journeys. Would love a hand operated accelerator, auto with cruise is as close as it gets.

Totally get it with the injuries. That's the backstory to my SLK - needed auto, expected fast recovery so chose something I'd want anyway - but nearly 4 years later I've still got the SLK and still got the plate, screws and wire with degraded joint/arthritis to spice it up (and a sideways foot. Bloody doctors, you'd think they'd know which way around it went).

Adaptive cruise is wonderful, cruise is good - worst day I had was traffic jam, thunderstorms and manual A-class that is the only one I've had without cruise.

Hand controls are surprisingly inexpensive for common cars. I didn't get them because Access to Work would contribute, but only if I did a test to show I could use them and only a share to cover work use of the car - and on balance I was happier just switching feet.

How about a Nissan Murano...3.5 V6 pez and capable of carrying a small country with the back seats down. Nice looking and nailed-on futureshite.

If you're offering it for sale that's a shame would have had it for sure.

Have purchased the Ovlov. After a very pleasant transaction with a back street dealer I proceeded south last night. There was half a tank of fuel so despite averaging 28mpg I just sneaked home without the need for a pez station shot, chucked boards in the cavernous rear and headed for the sea. Cheap fuel in local Texaco tomorrow!

It's the queitest, smoothest most comfortable car I've ever driven. To be honest I feel like an imposter having such a nice car.

A 406 estate will meet all  your criteria and a petrol one should be available for pennies now

I'm with you all the way for auto with cruise control,it's so much easier to drive when you're not 100%, I don't think I will ever buy a manual again

Bought an automatic by mistake in 1999' not intentionally bought a manual since (though the odd one creeps through). I had a 176k Voyager that was 9 years old and bullet proof, so another vote here. I did it the instant MPG to flash 7 mpg once, but hey it had an electronic compass!
