Out of all the cars I've owned, the only one I miss is my old Sapphire Cosworth.

3dr Cosworths didn't drive half as well.

Hells teeth! an RS500 doesn't fetch that much, you could even get a slightly mingey Lotus Carlton for less than half that.

I must say however, I have a major soft spot for Cosworths and other Fast unnasuming saloons from this era.

Well, I'm glad then that I only like shit Rovers that handle like a druken horse and rusty old Mercs that shed oil, metal and balljoints then. They're not an investment opportunity, just bought because I like them, thats worth more than any money.

That said, maybe this is where I am going wrong and why I am always so piss poor....

Is it a 'proper' classic?  Or the most over-hyped, overrated piece of rusty crap from a manufacturer that surely can only get the reviews and ratings it does by injecting serious cash into the right pockets.  You can almost see the 'Sponsored by Ford' logo on Clarkson's forehead now he's losing his hair!

It's this false, constantly re-enforced reputation that has been etched into the mindset of the masses that creates these embarrassingly inflated sums for certain types of car that really aren't as good as you'd hope.

Why is this so damaging?  Because genuine enthusiasts can now not afford the cars they want and the remaining examples will be left under a sheet in a heated garage for ever more.

Yes it is. I've driven one (many years ago mind) and it was a very serious car when it was new. It was the most unlikely base for a serious performance car, but as a race car it certainly delivered the goods and when current, they were fast enough on the road that you knew not to mess with one - many a 911 or 308GTB owner had their pants pulled down by one of these. The standard Sierra was a nice handling car and these were something else again. 'Fuck it, we're going to built this' cars like the Cosworth, E30 M3, UR Quattro etc will never be seen again.

Rust? They were built in Germany and were a lot more rust resistant than the UK cars. To expect one to be rust free after 25-30 years is daft.

Fast? They certainly were. They didn't weigh much and 204 bhp was enough to make it pretty lively. With only minor tweaks they were good for 250-275 bhp that that equates to @ 13 second 0-100 times.

I'd love a 3 door Cossie but, having bought a second house last year, I can't afford one. Boo Hoo. I had a lovely M3 though, plus a UR Quattro, BMW CSL etc so I can't moan.

Sapphire Cosworth? Arguably a better car yes, but it looks like a Minicab.

As much as I like old Fords and defend them against criticism, this is plain and simply not the case. The standard Sierras were terribly handling and very unpredictable, especially when wet. They are infamous for displaying sudden understeer without any pre warning whatsoever, which is truly frightening. This can also be read in contemporary road tests. It caught me out twice and that's when I got rid of mine. I'm not the only one, other Sierra owners I met reported the same. As with pretty much all old Fords except the Granada MKII, people in England seem to quickly forget how shit they really were and make up legends of goodness.

All my cars look like minicabs since about 1996.

I had a 405 Mi16 and when I gave my mate and his very pissed brother in law a lift home one night the bil said he didn't know I was a cabbie and insisted on paying so I didn't get in trouble with my boss. Twat.

Then I got the Sapphire and f me if it didn't happen again with a different pissed idiot.

The family bus used to be an Octavia estate and is now a diesel galaxy.

I am NOT a taxi. Okay?!

Driving around East London in a doom blue Corolla will see you get everyone sticking their head in your window "Stratford a fiver yeah mate?"

I did have one guy offer me £20 to take me to his house which was right near mine - that one was accepted! Black cabs would have charged £80 if they were going east so he got a bargain and I operated as an illegal minicab. What a rush!

My Mk1 Sierra was nippy but handled like poo at speed and was unstable in anything resembling a crosswind. My Mk2 Grannies were fine :)

Please note that I originally read the thread title as £47.25.
