Quick diseasel question

Been to have a look at a very local diesel MG ZR on a 2001 plate for a friend. It's not very expensive at all.

Needs a good clean and a couple of light body fettles.

Its the 1.9/2.0 diesel lump, starts happily and has been stood for 6 months. Fair bit of black smoke came out when revved and the EML light is on and has been for a while.

Any ideas? Injector or ??

I know feck all about diesels but this one sounded happy enough. No mayo on dipstick, etc, etc. Tidy enough interior but needs a good clean.

Egr clogged on our old scenic caused same symptoms and loss of power under load.

I was thinking EGR or MAF but these are just guesses :)

EML could be anything, injector, glow plugs,EGR, take your pick.

What engine is it, I thought these had the L-series? if so get it bought.

Whack a cap full of two stroke oil into the tank, fill it up and give it the Italian tune up of its lifetime.

Yes, these will be the good old 2 litre L-Series.

EML could be anything, need the codes read really.

The ECUs on these can be damaged by jump starting other vehicles, just something to remember. I've jump started off an L before and not broken it though.

Thrash the absolute bollocks off it.

Yes, it is the L series engine. Are these OBD2 or T4 reader jobbies?

Ok, 2 stroke in the tank and italian tune up first of all then :)

I *think* the 200 and 400 were OBD post (minor) facelift in 1999ish so anything MGR era should be.

Looks like I might be talking shite and OBD didn't come in until 2004 on the diseasels, 2001ish on petrols.

The only think that goes on these coal burners is the MAF.  Just disconnect it.  They're bomb-proof.

Have advised to go ahead. Project time methinks.
