Took the knackard box off 

 

 

And then took the manifolds and turbo off

 

 

And then fitted my good box to the good engine and dropped it back into the red one. I started running hoses and wiring and ran out of light so called it a day.

 

I had to use the top engine mount from the donor car as mine had the later hydro type which didn't match the casting on the new engine but other than that. All plain sailing!

Everything went back easily the next day with a few minor exceptions.

 

The thermostat housing was different so needed to be swapped over and the drivers side driveshaft needed to be used from the donor as the original one to my car had a bearing carrier in a casting attached which bolted up to the back of the engine. The new engine didn't have the threaded holes to bolt it with so i used the other shaft which just had a rubber doughnut for balancing purposes.

It went in smoothly.

 

So here it is all hooked up and i even re-fitted the engine cover.

 

 

I was getting nervous about the start up whilst filling the coolant and gearbox but surely it would be ok right?

 

Anyway, first turn of the key (after robbing the battery from the 106) and it just turned over and over and over with no attempt to start

So after a weekends work swapping engines and now having two dead cars on the drive i started fault finding.

 

It didn't take too long to notice that the glow light wasn't coming on at all. I had no idea why so read up online and discovered it could be the fuel cut off inertia switch.

 

I pressed it and it made a healthy click and then this happened

On a serious note- bloody good effort and please ensure you keep the oil level at the minimum mark

You are not the first person to call me a lunatic. Everybody i spoke to about this said i would be wasting my time but now who's laughing. It may have been hard work but the car owes me less than £300 with materials.

I can't find a Scenic as nice for less than £800.

I decided to whip the head off the old engine just to see what was the problem before it went for scrap.

Next up was to get it clean.

 

All this standing around had caused the interior to go mouldy although it still smelt ok strangely.

 

I didn't get any before shots but i have some after shots

 

 

 

It's actually really nice in there. It has a cooler box, huge pull out drawers under the front seats, huge compartments under the rear floor and under the rear seats.

It has climate control, lovely comfortable leather seats 4 electric windows and loads of other  rubbish fancies

 

It's quite a pleasant place to be and the rear passengers have the use of some rather novel picnic tables.

 

Gave the outside a quick wash too

 

 

At this point i had swapped the insurance over so i could drive it for the first time and hope that all was well

I have never done anything like this before but as a panel beater, i have seen it done at work plenty of times.

 

I thought it was really easy to do. Just tiring and a bit fiddly here and there

So first drive time.

 

Well, it didn't smoke or make any strange noises and was actually pretty good but my god it's slloooooowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww with no boost at all

 

Defiantly not right so back to the drawing board.

 

I compared the throttle pedal position to that of the donor car and there was a noticeable difference. Mine was almost on the floor whereas the donor had several inches of travel.

 

These have a fly by wire throttle so i traced the cable to a control box which looks like you can adjust the position by removing a clip and pulling the threaded plastic cable carrier up and then putting the clip back.

 

I did that and my god it made a difference.

 

It actually flies! I was very surprised. I have driven vans with this engine before but always found them slow so expected this to be no different.

After a few hundred miles, the on board trip meter was showing an average MPG of 51.4 round town which is fine by me.

 

Everything is running smoothly with no problems at all.

 

Well apart from one.......

 

I washed it and found a massive puddle in the passenger footwell.

 

After some investigation i found the problem

 

 

Blocked up with shit

 

And the water was going in here

Anyway, cleaned it all up

 

 

And pinched a strut cover from the garden ornament  donor car and put it back together

We had a scenic on a 51 plate,same colour as your donor motor. Great motor with a good turn of speed too. Ours was a privilege model with leather,twin electric sunroofs,split tailgate etc. Would have another

The next job was to loose the donor.

 

SWMBO has been on my back about it but i wanted to keep it around for if  when i need spares.

 

That wasn't good enough for her so i stripped off what i thought i might need and called round for some quotes. I have had my moneys worth but i wanted to get what i could for it in scrap

 

the best one i got was £30 from some Polish gent so arrangements were made.

 

he was supposed to turn up mid afternoon whilst it was still light (earlier this year) but ended up showing up at 8:30 in the pitch black.

 

Now my driveway is unusual in that it is pitch black at night with no lighting at all but he insisted it would be ok.

 

He backed his tranny down the drive and hooked up the winch cable to the toe eye and winched it up on the truck. He clambered onto the truck, opened the door to apply the handbrake and as he leaned in, the winch gave way and the car fell off the beavertail at speed taking him out in the process.

 

OH MY FUCKING GOD!!!!

 

He almost killed himself as well as breaking the garage window, smashing two downpipes off of the wall and smashing up the balcony which is above the front half of the garage.

 

He apologised but that wasn't good enough. I felt bad he had fucked his arm up but WHAT ABOUT MY PROPERTY!!!

 

He handed over some readies to pay for the damage and then put the car back on the lorry and left quickly.

 

needless to say, i won't be using him again

What an awesome effort. If ever a car situation shouted 'RUN AWAY' its buying a £150 misfiring renner scenic off another landmass. You've turned he job around and ended up with a decent motor. RESTECP
