Guest Breadvan72 Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 Anyone fancy hitting some electric fans with a big hammer? See page 2 of this:- http://autoshite.com/topic/20953-no-drama-collectorama-caution-shonky-lotus-content/ Anyone with SKILLZ who fancies a laugh at an 80s plastic car, and might be interested in CASH and/or BEER would be most welcome to give me a bell via Beigemail. Cheers!
purplebargeken Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 You are most likely best served by getting the AA involved, hopefully the might be able to identify the fault and at least get the car back to civilisation where it can be fettled at your leisure/properly. Going home from London today in an old unreliable British sports car with no working fans will not be good for your health or the car. Good luck Sir.
Guest Breadvan72 Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 This I know. I would only risk driving it at about 3AM if roads clear. It so happens that I have a room booked in London this evening, so I could try nocturnal frolics, but instead I will call the AA later and make an appointment to meet the AA van at the car park. Then I can retire to my room and hit the cokeNhookaz hotline to celebrate or commiserate, depending on outcome.
purplebargeken Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 Just hit 'em anyway, it is the AS way. Likely to be traffic problems at 3am knowing how people will respond today I hope it ends well and please keep us updated. Even about the hookers and coke. Especially about the hookers and coke.
Andrew353w Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 if the AA cannot/will not move it can it be towed? I can offer the services of an "A" frame, complete towing lighting and a 2 litre Citroën to pull it with if I can assist. PM me if you think I can help. purplebargeken 1
Guest Breadvan72 Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 Ta, if needs to be towed, AA can do it, but will let you know if get in TRUB. Cheers.
jonny69 Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 I'm on that side of London but I doubt I'll be able to get over there to help, unfortunately. Apologies. If it's blowing big fuses then it sounds like there's a short somewhere after the fuse. My diagnosis would be it's either the fan motor shorting out or a relay if it's got relays. If there aren't relays then it could also be the fan switch in the radiator. I'd probably start by running a wire straight from the battery positive to the fan to see if the fan itself is working properly and work back from there. But I agree that this is probably a good one to call the AA out for.
tooSavvy Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 Running a wire direct from Batt to Fan, sir?? FireEx rental optional. TS
Guest Breadvan72 Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 Plan now PLANNED. I will be up mega early tomorrow, and will take the car in the cool and quiet of the morning and going via Regent's Park to the two Johns in Highbury, who are mega diamond geezers and looked after my cars when I lived in that London. Old school mechanics in a big shed full of tat. Their only failing is that they forget to charge for their work.
Guest Breadvan72 Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 Tube strike in Londres today. Beware!! Holmes, you astound me!
Tetleysmooth Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 Holmes, you astound me!Bit of sarcasm never goes amiss. I give up with this forum
purplebargeken Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 So it will be like any other day then. Thought his name was Andrew
inconsistant Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 I thought it was youtube that were on strike. alf892, Magnificent Rustbucket and Junkman 3
Junkman Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 My £0.02 worth: It's a knackered fan relay. You will see "Magneti Marelli" printed on it. This is Italian and means "Lucas". anonymous user, TagoraSX, purplebargeken and 3 others 6
richardmorris Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 Good luck! I had a stressful weekend with working fans. Not sure I'd cope with dead ones in summer. I expect it's a dead relay. If you could short it out and get them running all the time it would be no issue. I have fuses and plenty of wire if you're near chobham in extremis.
Guest Breadvan72 Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 Cheerze all. In the cool of the early morning, I drove the car gently from Marylebone, via Regent's Park and Camden Town, to Islington, where the spectacularly ace two Johns took it in for a look. The car didn't overheat on the way, although it was getting quite hot by the time I reached the garage. One fan has seized. This almost melted the wiring and also blew out the override switch. One fan is now working, another is to be ordered. Car staying in London for the weekend so that the Johns can look at it some more next week, attending to some other niggles that need doing anyway, and fit the fan when it arrives. skattrd, inconsistant, Magnificent Rustbucket and 3 others 6
Magnificent Rustbucket Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 WP_20150710_07_40_55_Pro.jpg This picture looks like it has escaped from one of those high concept photoshoots beloved of Car Magazine in the Eighties. Well, it would do if Autoshite let you quote pictures, so you'll have to guess which one I was talking about!
