Talbot Samba LE, this need to be saved!

Haven't seen many Sambas with points! All mine have electronic ignition. A nice rare quirk there, if it were me I'd leave it be.

From my days behind a parts counter I seem to remember Sambas having a choice of about 6 different types of points set ups.

Take a pic with you when you want some more.

Talbot Samba, what fun!  I had a 1978 Peugeot 104 GL and a 1982 Y reg Samba LS with the same 954cc lump.  These are smooth and perky engines when set up right.  The Samba 954 would keep up on the motorway no problem, but was never perfect.  The carb was fairly knackard so it got one from an early Peugeot 205 which did the trick for a while.

Discount any suggestion of putting a TU engine in the car from an 106/205/AX.  The engine in the Samba has the gearbox mounted in the sump with the clutch bolted on the end of the engine with a transfer, both engine and gearbox share the same oil.  I have seen photos of a Samba with a 309 GTi engine and gearbox and it basically needs the whole front of the 309 cut and shunting on to the Samba.

Clutches can be stiff and heavy if at the end of their life, but often the cable is dry and needs lubricating.

I suspect the car you have will have points rather than electronic ignition.  Their no bother to change just take the dizzy off and do it, it can only go back one way.  Just mark it before removing it.

Valve clearance are tricky but can be done in the car......

I remember having lots of fun in mine it handled well and you could through it about a bit with a grin.

The killer, and I don't care what the opinion is, is unleaded fuel.  It will burn the valves and give poor compression eventually.  Mine died that way, and I've seen 104 heads distroyed too.

Always use a genuine Purflux oil filter as you MUST have a non return valve to keep oil available upon starting.
