Welding on my MR2

Recommended Posts

Posted

My mk1 MR2 failed it's MOT on a few areas of welding last week.  Al Bundy off this site came round on a Sunday to fix it for me. Top bloke and I was very pleased with the results.  The main area that needed sorting was the inner and outer sill where it meets the rear wheelarch. I'm no welding expert but i was very pleased with the results.  He didn't just weld a plate over the rot but cut it all out, cut the metal to the right shape and welded it in exactly.  I haven't got much experience of welding but he made it look easy.  He is now top of my list if/when i need any doing on my Astra or other shite which i may acquire.  Just need to give it some filler and protection then refit the side skirt.

I learned a lesson and no wear goggles for any cutting or grinding.

Thanks for the link.

Thread is next to useless now, seeing as I deleted all of the pics.

The car was a rotten mess.

When I restore a car, from a bare shell, I don't want to end up with a patchwork quilt with seemingly unstoppable rot.

I have no love for the mk1, after that escapade - and imo a disappointing driving position - but it is still nice to see you repairing yours. :-)

I'll still have a read through when I get a few minutes. I can see why it would put you off a mk1. Mine has only needed a small plate welding before this and that was 10 years ago. It helps that it's garaged and only used a bit. Rust is the killer for these though especially if you get a bad one. Mechanically they are pretty robust.

As it happens i've just giving my white mr2 a once over before i list is as spares or repair. It had a restoration and full respray about 8 years ago so bodywork wise it's very nice and mechanically good too. I'll put a for sale thread on here before submitting it to the evil bay. It was a £2k car up till 4 years ago but was then left outside for a couple of years which they don't like much so needs exhaust, brakes sorting and probably a few other unseizing type jobs.
