Best ever garage find?

Just seen a small article about a guy in Gosforth, Newcastle, who was given the job of clearing out his recently deceased uncle's belongings. Upon opening the garage, he found a Bugatti Type 57 S Atalante(?) which had been sat there for 50 years!!! Up for auction now, and expected to fetch about 6 million!!!!!!!

Nice find alright. 8)

Dr Harold Carr died in June 2007 aged 89, a childless bachelor.

He left the lock-up in Newcastle to his nephews and nieces, without telling them of its invaluable contents.

Alongside the Bugatti they also found an E Type Jaguar and an Aston Martin.

They have decided to put the Bugatti, which has not been driven since 1960, up for auction.

It will be the star of Bonhams' Retromobile car sale in Paris on February 7.

Crikey, that's gone up! It was three million on the BBC website yesterday!

agreed was 3 million yesterday :?

Only 3 million? Bugger, not worth bothering to sell it then! Do you think it's safe from the banger boys?

Someone is going to get well lamped for inheritance tax then. Better to have sat on this for a few months and then (quietly) auction it off without a blaze of publicity.

I suspect that was already the problem and they can't afford to keep it. And even if they could they probably couldn't afford to insure/restore/secure it By selling it I guess they can afford to keep the Aston and Jag though which are more usable after all.I'd love a Bugatti but I think if I were to inherit one worth so much I'd sell it buy a cheaper Bugatti and a barn full of snotters.

Looks like the shrewd old Doctor knew exactly what he had locked away:

James Knight, International Head of Bonhams' motoring department said: "I have known of this Bugatti for a number of years and, like a select group of others, hadn't dared divulge its whereabouts to anyone.

Bet he was thinking if the nieces and nephews are good and visit me they can have it, if not the Cat Sanctuary gets it :lol:

not quite as exciting as a rare Bugatti but...My sisters fella is a bit of an odd job man and a dear old lady gave him the task of clearing her garden, in which was a garage that was covered in undergrowth and had a small tree growing over the garage door. He cleared the tree and loads of undergrowth only to discover the old dears long dead husbands MGBGT sat there. She knew it was there and hadn't been moved in a number of years so offered it to him in way of payment. My sister now plods around in it on the weekends :D

I must admit, I've often wondered what might be hidden within the dark spaces of garages seen out and about that look like they haven't been opened in years. A drivable MGBGT would be lovely to find, weather you kept it or flogged it!

I know of one bloke who has 2 Bugatti's, 3 or 4 Blower Bentleys, a Jag SS, Morgan 3 wheeler and others sat in his sheds. He drives a 60's Marcos about with a very breathed on 1760 Mex engine, but the car looks fit for scrap. To look at him, you wouldn't think he had a pot to piss in.

the MG needed a little work like the brakes needed an overhaul, tyres were perished and the britework and wheels had to be rechromed plus a damn good service and I think a carb rebuild but apart from the britework her fella did it all and the bodyworks near mint after a cut and polish, so it wasn't a simple driveaway deal but for a few hundred quid they've got a pearler of an MGB.At this point I'd also like to say she's also got a brown Mk1 Escort 1300 4 door, a silver Cortina 2.0 GL (might be a Ghia I'll ask next time) and one of my old Mk2 Golf GTi's....so she doesn't do too bad, plus theres also loads of shitetastic mancunian tat turning up weekly as her fella is also a bit of a driveway mechanic.I'll get some pics next time I'm up

I was just about to say, we REALLY need to see some pics!

A bloke I knew bought a house at auction, and there was a large brick built store attached....seems that nobody knew what was in it............he only wanted the house, but for his trouble, when he broke off the locks/doors and opened the building, found a Lagonda, with a couple of spare Meadows engines........ Not worth a huge deal due to the type/condition, but it made a great conversation piece. He kept one of the spare engines for an ornament........

Now that's a haul I'd like to see pics of up on here!It sounds like a similar haul that was unearthed in Europe a few years back, might dig out the pics of that and shove them on here, really shabby nick but worth millions. That Bugatti in Newcastle is such a dream. Not sourced any pics of the E-Type or Aston yet, has anyone?

A mate told me of a fella called 'shitinabucket' up chester way who has a few barns of bizzare old stuff (all with NSF damage due to a corner on a road that runs through his farm) Healey 3000's, XK120's etcHe's called 'shitinabucket' due to the fact that each time a bit of his farmhouse collapses he just boards the door to the offending room up. The bathroom was the first to go...

I heard they were selling this car abroad (France or somewhere) because it will fetch £6m as opposed to £3m ver there and there may possibly be a tax dodge in there somewhere 8)...

I doubt selling it in fromt of the world at Retromoble will help them dodge any UK taxes but it probably will help it reach the highest price possible which seems fair enough. More commision for the auctioneers that way too.I do wonder what the Aston is that has been mentioned in the press. DB4GT? DB5? Or perhaps a Lagonda with all the gold trim?!

I read in the Daily Hate on Friday that the Aston (model not determined) has already been sold, and the E-Type was so rusty it had to be scrapped...

Posted

My wife buys it  and I picked it up due to boredom...anyway, I hadn't done enough "exasperated shouting" that day and the Hate delivered on that front with it's piss-poor journalistic standards...

What are everyone's newspapers of choice then? Be interesting to know...

Yesterday I bought the Daily Star and The Sun. Well, three of each actually. I'm paper-training a puppy and they're the cheapest ones to piss on.

 I don't buy newspapers much any more, I used to buy the Independent regularly before it got shit.
Posted

i never buy one now mainly due to the fact where i am in france they are a day behind and by then i already know the news, once i week i'll jump on skynews/bbcnews and france24 websites to catch up other than that its the same on the TV normally at least once in the day..(normally at 11pm when all the girls are in bed and its background whilst i do website work etc)

Must admit, I've not bought a paper in years! Already too depressed by the TV news!!

Posted

I don't often buy a paper although I'll generally have a quick look ("read" would not be the right word here) at the Daily Star if someone leaves it around at work. I do occasionally buy the Sunday Times if I've nothing much to do on a Sunday and I'm feeling intelligent!

It alternates between the Sun and the Star depending on whichever is doing the "20p" thing, to be honest both are shit, but the problem pages keep me amused during dinner time, if i want news i surf the Beebs news site and if I am honest, then i am a closet Express reader, but never buy one myself, i just nick my fathers...
