sierraman Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 Transmission seems to be whining on the Mondeo on over run, whether its in gear or not. Its only just started doing this, can't see any leaks. I don't think its the wheel bearings as there isn't play in them, nor does it do it just on bends. Conclusion I've come to is that its possibly the bearings in the transmission. I know this is a difficult question but given its not loud and its only just started, might I be looking at getting a few more years out of it just accepting it or do these get bad quick?
overrun Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 Sounds like a Paul Banham Metro-based, Mondeo-looking kit car m8. Jim Bergerac and Vince70 2
rainagain Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 If you apply the brakes does it make any difference to the noise? If so it's likely to be wheel bearings, you can then use the hand brake to work out if its the front or rear bearings.
sierraman Posted March 31, 2015 Author Posted March 31, 2015 No, its just a 11 year old mondeo with an annoying whine. Unfortunately there's no sequential offered on the mk3 mondeo
sierraman Posted March 31, 2015 Author Posted March 31, 2015 No change with the brakes. I expected it to be the wheel bearings initially but it sounds as if its the transmission. I could live with it but as and when the clutch went I'd skip it as there's no point fitting it to a shagged gearbox

alf892 Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 Also check your tyres carefully.....round and even. Jack it up and put a brick close to the tyre and eye the gap through full rotation Jim Bell 1

dave21478 Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 If its not tyres or bearings then changing the gearbox oil shouldnt be too hard and might tell you something....ie if its full of shiny glitter. Either way, fresh oil wont harm it so I would do that and run it until it dies. red5 1
Vince70 Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 Just add sawdust A bodging mate of mine says that nylon net curtains works better though to quieten a noisy box as that is what he put in his Vauxhall chevette. But my father recently had a Focus which had about 120000 on the clock and it changed gear lovely but the box had a slight whine so we changed the gearbox oil and also put some gearbox additive in it and it transformed the box and it was lovely and quiet afterwards..
sierraman Posted March 31, 2015 Author Posted March 31, 2015 Good point, don't think there's a drain hole but I can check it doesn't want topping up. Its having the MOT on 16th so all will become clear then to rule out the wheel bearing. Its not worth chucking another gearbox in, if be paying someone to do it and the cars probably worth no more than £1000. With any luck if its the bearings wearing out I could nurse it on for another 2 years or so with any luck until the bearings become intolerable. Hopefully it will be the bearing, and all will be well, I just couldn't feel any perceptible movement in the wheel nor any grating.
Guest Lord Sward Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 Changing the box oil and putting an additive in will make a difference, but not for the first hundred miles.
2MB Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 My gf's polo went from whine to dropped bearing to fucked in a couple of miles, but they have notoriously weak boxes and mondeos don't. With bearings it's usually too late by the time you hear a noise, but by all means change the oil if it's only a faint whine
sierraman Posted March 31, 2015 Author Posted March 31, 2015 Tested it this evening, it does it between 40-50mph, on over run, braking makes no difference to the noise, this possibly and the lack of play ruled out the wheel bearing. Funnily enough didn't do it when car was stone cold, only once warmed through so obviously once oil has warmed up and thinned out. Hopefully should still get some time out of the box!
