Inspector Morose Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 Well, there was the time I backed a Metrobus out of the garage to wash off a wheel before I repainted it. Unfortunately I clipped one of the cast iron pillars holding up the roof of the garage. One lower Metrobus and one wrecked garage later. Made the news, I did. saucedoctor, catsinthewelder, steve_earwig and 5 others 8

Ecosse RM Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 Around 1995 me and a mate halved in for an Avenger and fitted a 2.0 pinto, all mechanicals done so time for a quick blow over to freshen up. It was 23rd December the day after paint and in a hurry to unmask the car before the holidays we both worked late. Next day we were all off and then family on 25th, nobody drove anything... Except my mate, mum, dad, sister and girlfriend all over to his aunts for Christmas lunch. 2pm he calls me.. 'when you unmasked the front and refitted the grill why didn't you take the bin bags tapped to the radiator off? No, really are you sure? .... Yes, FFS! etc.... We fixed it weeks later but the accelator cable was a botch job, driving it up the road (not public) with someone sitting on a bonnet- less perch working the carb manually the steering lock (supposedly) failed and a minor collison with my mk1 golf parked at the garage entrance was next and also the end of the Avenger... (I originally ''removed' the steering lock/ barrel, no keys when saved from the scrappy. Having hammered it with a bolster it stopped working but was still attached, young and naive I didn't appreciate what I was doing, just as well it boiled and then had a return to where it came from). A story that still is recounted after a few bevys with my mate 20 or so years later. philibusmo 1
Partridge Posted March 19, 2015 Posted March 19, 2015 I had one of those moments yesturday morning. Went to fill the car up, and noticed the screw on filler cap wasn't there. The time I filled up, I was in Dorking. If anyone stops at an Esso garage in Dorking, can you look for it please?
richardmorris Posted March 19, 2015 Posted March 19, 2015 Not me but my car. My CX DTR was in the garage having welding repairs made to the rear subframe. Car up in the air on a four post lift with welder at the back. He suddenly noticed it getting brighter under the car and watched as it started to nose dive off the lift. The rear buttress next to the rear window hit the steel roof beam knocking the car back down and he and his colleague grabbed it and hung on. It landed square on the lift pads happily, and damage was limited to the side stainless steel trim that they found a replacement for and a 20p sized dent that they had repaired. Apparently brown trouser moment all round and the welder had to go and have a cup of tea. Centre of gravity with the diesel lump is quite far forward with no fuel in the tank!
steve_earwig Posted March 19, 2015 Posted March 19, 2015 I'll be thinking about that the next time one of mine goes up on a 4-poster. Not me either, many years ago my bro was watching one of his neighbours welding up under his car (Viva maybe). He watched as the car filled up with smoke, then the welder noticed too, opened up the car and woomp! Ne.nar-ne-nar. I did mange to set myself on fire welding under a mate's Avenger, I was lying on this big lump of foam and my mate's brother came past, said hi and then did a double.take - Steve, you're on fire! saucedoctor 1

HH-R Posted March 19, 2015 Posted March 19, 2015 On one of the 1.6 million times my Fiat wouldn't start, I took the driver's side front wheel off to get at the crank sensor and change it. I still don't know how I did it, but I managed to thread not just one but three of the wheel studs. I had to take it to a garage red faced and later on, back home empty walleted. To add insult to injury it still wouldn't start.
fordperv Posted March 19, 2015 Posted March 19, 2015 I have had one of those moments today, i removed the front part of the arch liner on my saph so I could undo the airbox, upon refitting the airbox i fastened the bolts up then continued to screw the arch liner back up, then when putting my tools away i noticed a 10mm socket was missing, i spent 10 minutes looking for it, then set about taking the front of the liner off again, the socket was sat on the last nut i tightened
