Bren Posted March 14, 2015 Posted March 14, 2015 Funnily enough I was thinking about avengers - they look like they are poular now nobody can afford a mk3 tina.
Faker Posted March 14, 2015 Author Posted March 14, 2015 I was chasing a talbot avenger estate recently but missed out on it. Would love an old routes estate..
cros Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 Never owned one but delivered quite a few new Avengers back when they were a very unfashionable new car. Was always surprised what a good drive they were. Good economy too.
Junkman Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 Last time I checked Sinman Sceptogue prices, they made even severely scene taxed Tinas look like bargains. The Rootes Group boat I missed for good it seems, despite I always had a hankering for their wares.Make mine a Sceptre MK1 (note unique green house/fin treatment) or an Alpine from before they clipped its wings.Especially the dashboard of a '63-'65 Sceptre is severely arousing, even putting a '58-'61 Corvette dash to shame. And despite the car is actually Beatles vintage, everything about it is gleefully Chas McDevitt era.A masterpiece!Apart from that, few people know, that at the time they did the Tiger, they also fitted Small Block Fordsto a handful of Singer Vogues and used them as test mules. They were never approved for production, but ifthey had, they'd have created an entirely new class of cars, making a Rover V8 look naff and probablychanged British automotive history. Alas, this was not to be. However, I just so happen to know a chap, who happens to own one of those test mules and about a quarter century ago, I was priviledged enough todrive it. Every time I recall this event, you'd need two hours to get the grin off my face if I threw thetowel that moment. On the other hand, there are the big Humbers, which change hands for surprisingly little money and iftatty enough, would nicely manifest your status of being a late 60s London hitman. So there is a thin chance that I might eventually board the Rootes Titanic after all. If I don't wait too long. Talbotman, eddyramrod, RayMK and 3 others 6
Asimo Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 Yep, the Super Snipe floats to the top of my 60s favourites regularly. Cool looking Hemi Engine And bench seats! NorfolkNWeigh, Sudsprint, Semi-C and 8 others 11
cros Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 This is the only Rootesmobile I've owned for any amount of time and its a strange thing. Must have cost a lot to build but has too many peculiarities. Single huge rear door hinges, two separate tool compartments (were they trying to tell the buyer something?) and a decently big (2.2l) engine joined to a feeble column-change Hillman 10 gearbox which often breaks. Inside theres not a bit of wood to be seen, just painted metal. Most bizarre is the log glow lighting effect that you get when you switch the heater fan on. The number of steering joints has to be seen to be believed - they all need greasing and its predictably vague to drive. I'd guess the Sunbeam Rapier was a lot better. RayMK, wuvvum, Junkman and 4 others 7

I'd guess the Sunbeam Rapier was a lot better.I drove one of these from Preston to Norfolk a few years back for a mate of a mate who'd bought it on eBay and couldn't be arsed to go and get it. It's honestly the only '50s motor I'd ever contemplate doing a 250-mile run in again. I thought it drove great, and I didn't find the steering any vaguer than anything else that age that I'd driven (apart from a Morris Minor obvs). I had great fun slinging it across the Peaks on the way home.
Angrydicky Posted March 19, 2015 Posted March 19, 2015 I like the look of those Sunbeam-Talbots, wouldn't mind one of those one day! Barrett doesn't like them though.
