Front pads nightmare MK 2

Recommended Posts

It seems like my topic on the trouble I had after fitting front pads to my daughter's Astra G was deleted in the hacking problem. You remember? Seal flip?

I can't remember who it was who suggested it, but wedging the brake pedal down overnight only bloody worked.

I went round her place on Saturday with a jack handle, started her car, wedged the jack handle between the pedal and seat, and left it for 24 hours.

Went back the next day, and SHE HAS BRAKES!!

Whoever it was who suggested it, please identify yourself, so I can thank you properly.

I am not in a position to help, but my last-ditch effort when facing hydraulic problems is to wedge the pedal down overnight. Sometimes works, sometimes doesnt, but costs nothing to try.

Bit too much info there Mel.

I tried searching the topics I started, and it wasn't there. Weird.

Anyway, big thanks to Dave 21478.

Good result but did you really leave it running for 24 hours?

huh? cool - glad it worked.

I was taught this by a crusty old mechanic at a garage I used to work at....an old boy in his 60's whose every third word was usually "fuck" or a variant of. He had to be kept away from the customers because he would happily tell them how fucking shit their cars were or how they were fucking idiots for not doing something etc etc.

Anyway, he told me this thing with wedging the pedal down. It doesnt always work, but is always worth a try before you start taking things apart and spending money.

Also works on clutch hydraulics.

Nope, I started the car just to get the pedal to the floor. With the car switched off, the brake pedal was about halfway, but sunk to the floor when running. Once the pedal was hard against the floor, I switched the car off.

I was wondering :o Hmm, I'd have thought it needed to be pumped up so there was pressure in the system but if it works it works I guess.

I suppose the seal gets "back pressure" from the rear shoe springs..?? And the piston being forward in the master cylinder bore , allows enough room for the seal to flip back.. cool

I thought you were going to say "you went round to her place with a can of petrol".

Glad it's sorted.

That's what I feel like doing with all her cars.

She wrecks every one she drives.
