I quite fancy going to look at this in the next couple of days....

But I dont know much (anything) about Series cars. I have owned Defender and Discos in the past, but nothing older. Anything glaringly amiss from the photos? What should I be checking? I assume everything below the roof should be checked for rust. Anything else?

Whats the proper operating methods for the red and yellow levers?

Thanks,

Bulkhead & chassis are the important bits.

Push down yellow knob for four wheel drive high range. Pull red lever back for low range & to reset 4wd yellow knob.

Are the double skin "safari" roofs anything special nowadays?

Kool wagon!

Apart from the paint and the wings that looks pretty original. As above, the chassis and bulkhead are the main bits, a man of your talents will soon eye up a "bad job". The worst bits chassis wise are often around spring hangers, outriggers, rear crossmember, gearbox crossmember... just take a torch and have a good old poke about.

Mechanically it should not need Popeye muscles to steer, the gearbox shouldn't drown out all other noises and though it won't win any drag races the engine should pull reasonably well - I'm guessing it's the rover engine, but having wrong-touched a few old LRs in France, the Peugeot diesel is a pretty common swap.

Brakes are often shite usually due to lack of adjustment, ditto steering. Suspension bushes wear out and knock, springs are often rock hard and splay out with rust. All the usual things like seeing it crack up from cold are especially important with an old diesel.  I would guess it's a '63 or '64 with that steering wheel and headlight panel combo. After a Freelander it will feel like that old digger you need to shift but to be honest if it is 'road legal' and stops and starts it's probably worth 1800 euro these days, especially in France, I dare say it would be easy to jazz up and make a tidy profit on in fact.

That's a very nice looking old thing, best check the clutch has plenty of bite if you're planning to A-frame that digger.

Check the bulkhead around the air vents, although from the pics it looks very sound. The advert says 1960 which should be  a series 2 and if original will have a two litre diesel, cylinder heads for these are very thin on the ground, the latter 2286 lump will bolt straight in.

Check the chassis from front to back for rot, all repair sections are readily available and cheap.

Safari roof is worth up to £350.

After a Disco it will be a whole new driving experience.

If you do buy it I have many spares for sale.

Check where the leaf springs attach to the chassis, especially at the very front of the vehicle (= dumb irons) and the body outriggers, leaf spring bushes, check the heater matrix and the rest of the cooling system for leaks... other than that and what's already been mentioned above, they're quite tough old buses really.
