purplebargeken Posted March 8, 2015 Posted March 8, 2015 Finally, a piccie of the Beetle. I replaced the water temp sensor which was as easy as an easy thing! I then noticed this: What the........ What the heck is missing? It is something that comes off the oil filler cap/housing. Anyone know? garethj 1
purplebargeken Posted March 8, 2015 Author Posted March 8, 2015 37 views and not one 'I know what it is' response. This forum ain't what.........
steve_earwig Posted March 8, 2015 Posted March 8, 2015 Some sort of mesh type filter oil separator thing? Feck knows, too modern, You need a parts diagram you do.
Station Posted March 8, 2015 Posted March 8, 2015 What engine is it? It looks like this pipe, has a bit cracked off the end? http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/MTIwMFgxNjAw/z/rrEAAOxy3cJTfH-V/$_35.JPG
Mr_Bo11ox Posted March 8, 2015 Posted March 8, 2015 Must be a breather pipe of some sort if its coming off the oil cap
purplebargeken Posted March 8, 2015 Author Posted March 8, 2015 Yep, looks like a breather pipe, seems to be around a tenner on ebay. Umm, the one's listed are for an 1.8 model. Mine is the 1.6. The top of the hose has a clip to hold it on. More like a traditional hose clip type thing. More researching needed but it is a breather pipe. Thanks for the piccie
hauserplenty Posted March 8, 2015 Posted March 8, 2015 If the hose is coming from the valve cover, it could be PCV-related.
purplebargeken Posted March 8, 2015 Author Posted March 8, 2015 I'll take a better piccie tomorrow, hopefully that will show it in more detail.
purplebargeken Posted March 14, 2015 Author Posted March 14, 2015 I've been looking on ebay and can't seem to find the exact replacement pipe. The bit where it connects to the body of the oil filler thingy looks different somehow. Here is a fuller picture: I have circled the offending part. The breakers where I normally frequent have an enginelsss Beetle in but there is nothing else that I can see that will do the job. I just wondered if any Shiters might be willing to liberate one from their local yard and I would happily compensate. Cheers Ken This pic is from another forum, someone lobbed in a bit of yellow pipe which didn't do the job, but it at least shows what I mean. Thanks.
mouseflakes Posted March 14, 2015 Posted March 14, 2015 Isn't that where the pineapple normally goes? Ghosty and vulgalour 2
Cheggers Posted March 14, 2015 Posted March 14, 2015 Isn't it the same engine as the Golf? - Britain's scrappies must be full of them...
purplebargeken Posted March 14, 2015 Author Posted March 14, 2015 Normally but quite a small pineapple, more like a chunk really which is why it likely fell off. I hear you but this one is mostly full of Rovers and French stuff at the moment, oh, and Vauxhalls. .
UltraWomble Posted March 14, 2015 Posted March 14, 2015 Not sure on the pipe diameters but surely you can Heath Robinson something with a couple of bits of 22 and 15mm copper pipe and a pipe bender?
purplebargeken Posted March 14, 2015 Author Posted March 14, 2015 I probably could but for the hassle it's easier to lob on another rubbery hose thing. Probably. I'd have to buy a pipe bender, 22mm and 15mm copper pipe too
steve_earwig Posted March 14, 2015 Posted March 14, 2015 Can't you get a 45 degree bend there? This is probably going to sound pretty stupid but I've just realised the engine we're looking at in those pictures is at the front of the car and not the back... vulgalour 1
vulgalour Posted March 14, 2015 Posted March 14, 2015 Try this thread: http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/f14/beetle-1-6-broken-breather-tube-80854.html It appears there's a flexible part that perishes and falls off and that's what is missing on your engine. purplebargeken 1
mouseflakes Posted March 14, 2015 Posted March 14, 2015 I hear you but this one is mostly full of Rovers and French stuff at the moment, oh, and Vauxhalls. . I was only joshing, not mocking Hope you find the bit you need. Could you just cut a short length of old radiator hose and push it on as a temporary fix? Ooh - good sleuthing skillz Vulg! ^^ purplebargeken 1
steve_earwig Posted March 14, 2015 Posted March 14, 2015 Nice find! I bought the replacement piece from VW. It was like $50-60.Ouch! I think we're go for copper fittings... purplebargeken 1
purplebargeken Posted March 14, 2015 Author Posted March 14, 2015 Cheers Angyl. Anyone got some 20mm OD plastic pipe?
purplebargeken Posted March 14, 2015 Author Posted March 14, 2015 I used to have tons of stuff just lying round. Now I have nothing. I have hate for clear outs and tidying. Meh!
