Ignoring All Warnings When Buying Shite

My dad always said that there were certain things to avoid when buying a motor.

Some of these provisos were:

automatic gearbox - because it can't be bump-started

flat red paint - due to the possibility of oxidized paint

after market sunroof - dodgy seals and water ingress

a turbo or other more complicated engine - cost of repairs

pop-up headlights - because they are pop-up headlights

Well, a few years ago, partly as a homage to my dad's life of shiteness and partly because I'm a dopey twat I decided to buy

a 'classic' car.

The car I bought was a Silvia S12 in non-metallic red, with an automatic box, the Ca18 turbo engine, a mutilated roof, and of course, the famous disappearing front lamps.

So why did I ignore all the flashing red warning lights and buy this Jap classic with no real redeeming qualities?

Answers on a postcard, please to nobodycares.com.

BTW, other than replacing wear and tear items and some simple recommissioning, it's been (touch wood) a really good car.

I was looking at a silver one of those on ebay, they do look like a nice steer.

I know for a fact* that you can fit four people and four "hopper" type vents for a West Midlands jumbo Fleetline in one of those, as long as the folks in the back lie down on the folded down seats. All the way back from Southend to Wolverhampton.

A as you may have gathered, one of our bus group had one from new, in red too. He had to have an auto as he lost the use of one arm when his Kwak triple landed on it in a rather nasty accident. Didn't slow him down though, just gained an extra pair of wheels.

Nice overdrive button on the gear selector!

None of your father's caveats apply if the car you are considering is square and 20th century.

I used to have it's later brother, an S13, the one the drifters improve* so much they're no longer usable. It ticked all your dad's boxes except it was a manual. Sorry.

I had an s12 and it was a lovely thing to waft around in. Was pretty damn close to being immaculate although the auto box and soft suspension made it more of a cruiser than a sports car. F119 DOM it was I think, and at the time I bought it it was the very car that came up near the top of Google searchs as it belonged to an enthusiast.

Swapped it for 2 motd and taxed Range Rover classics so it was wins all round with that one.
