pre-swap anxiety reg swap bollocks

I'm supposed to be swapping my CL500 for an SL280 tomorrow in St Helens. That's fine I'm happy with the deal but the SL has a private plate on it, which the owner wants to transfer or retain.

Fair enough BUT this means he has to send away the v5 and MOT to the DVLA so it can get the old reg no put back on it meaning I don't have any documentation.

Now obviously I can take copies of the documents and there'll be some kind of receipt but I won'have the v5/2 or MOT in my possession so should the v5 never turn up I can't apply for it.

So does anyone know;

Should I be able to take away the v5c/2 even though he needs to send the v5 off to the DVLA for the reg swap. if he doesn't do this is it a deal breaker?

How the hell do I tax it? if I have the v5c/2 number and tax it online the reg transfer will generate a new v5 in his name with a new v52/c on it. So could I potentially be taxing it in his name?

Should I just not worry about it as technically it's taxed by him until he sends the v5 off in my name once the plate has been swapped.

It's never easy eh?

Have you tried phoning DVLA?

I've always found them to be astonishingly helpful and honest, except the times I've phoned to try and wiggle out of a fine or something.

WHY swap for a 280?

That way madness lies. 280s aren't very good.

I had a Volvo S40 which I sold back in 2010. Prior to sale I had already instigated the transfer to my Omega which had replaced it, but when the guy came to pick it up it was still wearing the K30 JJK plate.

A week later I got the authorization to change plates with the new MoT and tax disc, rang the guy and we met up to change plates over. Because I had already started the transfer prior to him collecting I was able to retain the rights to the plate. I gave the guy the V5C/2 with the private plate details on and a receipt.

I think the problem you are likely to have here is with the tax aspect - take the V5C/2 with private plate details on and tax it, but when DVLA process ownership change and then private plate change it may possibly end up untaxed. I would advise doing it on direct debit to be safe. He needs to post the reg doc straight to DVLA before he gives car to you though otherwise he could lose the rights to the plate if you happened to be a complete cunt.

I took the car (Cavalier Mk2 Calibre) AND the V5 when I bought it and the previous owner still kept the reg. no. (A2 EWJ) so I don't think you'll have any problems.

If you do though, I'm only about 20 miles from St Helens and I'm happy to swap your car for my Vectra. That alone has probably settled it for you, but just in case: It's a diesel!

See you tomorrow.

Can't sell the cl everyone's terrified of it. Sl's even with that motor are on the up . It's very clean and had hard top. For what I've got in the cl I can't go wrong*

Johnk that's a good point on the direct debit I'll do that as if it all goes tits up the worst I've lost is a month.

You know I'm going to have a nightmare tonight where I'm driving back up the m6 all happy with my Mercedes when i suddenly feel an orangey glow across my face. My heart beat rises I look down and see an EML lit up on the dashboard and realise with I'm actually driving a VECTRA DIESEL. THE  HORROR.
