Are we allowed lorries?post-17414-0-35604600-1424267699_thumb.jpg

Three hundred thousand on the clock, with plenty more to go

Crash box and lever, she needs the heel and toe

She's not to cold in winter, but she cooks me in the heat

I'm a six foot driver, but you can adjust the seat

On a Border Reiver

Anyone know if Knopfler was intentionally lyricizing the Albion or the fleet of Robsons (frae Carlisle) who always had a Border Reiver on their fleet....

Just found this from an American interview.

“Border Reiver†takes its title from the raiders who ran the Anglo-Scottish borders centuries ago. “It’s about the hard life of a lorry driver at the end of the ’60s. We lived near the Albion works in Glasgow and I’d see drivers dressed like long riders in goggles and trench coats taking out the chassis to test them before they were fitted with their cabs and beds. Albions were known for their quality and ‘Sure As The Sunrise’ was the company motto.â€Â

The song also provides a thematic link to one from the 1978 album that helped make Knopfler’s name. “In Newcastle we lived near the A1, the nation’s main north-south route,†he says, “and at eight years old I was starting to know the liveries of the major haulage companies as their lorries came through town. In the hitch-hiking years of my teens and early 20s, many kind-hearted lorry drivers stopped to pick me up. The song ‘Southbound Again’ on the first Dire Straits album is about that, going up and down the country and my blossoming romance with London.â€Â

Was listening to the late, great Sandy Denny in the car the other day, and her epic ballad Solo includes the lines:

What a wonderful way to live
Traveling all over the world
Why the fame and all the golden
Opportunities unfurled

No time for the gent with the Mulliner Bentley
And Heaven knows what else
Why, he wouldn't even stand a chance
With all his oil wells

which I would reckon is probably the only time that particular coachbuilder got a mention in a song...
