Not Quite Free Cars.

Mk1 Minis were £10-£30 when I had a string of them in the late 70s.  Mind you, weighing them in got you £3 tops.   I used to buy the barrie-d ones and sell the accessories separately after they had inevitably shit themselves mechanically.    Last true bargain I had was a sub-£200 (cant remember the exact figure) 280SE W116 Merc in around 2004/5.   MoT'd and taxed, it ran for several months until I sold it on with no ticket.  That, I guess is the trouble - cheap cars don't seem to warrant the expense even if it was worth tons more.  It was rusty, too.

I got a Vectra estate a couple of years ago for £80..........came with a full tank of fuel and 4 months test.

It also had a snapped cam belt and 16 bent valves but when fixed it still only owed me about £300. I ran it for a while and put it straight through another test before selling it for £750.

89 Metro 5 door, white, 1 litre of sheer excitement, esp. with a dodgy 2nd gear that jumped out when you dropped the throttle (unless you held it in). - £50, ran it for 6 months (alongside my Lancia Integrale - seriously!!), as I trusted it fine I was happy to sell it to a mate for the same money, he ran it for a couple more years.

A pile of shite? Yes, but you can't knock it for value for money.
