The tape, I meant to take it , it is only a copy so can easily be replaced.

Yes Ian, it does seem to run cool, we have discussed the likelihood of it having no thermostat as the needle only gets up in slow traffic, It cannot be made to overheat though.

Photos , I download from my camera to the pictures file, then on here use the "more reply options" to load photos via the " attach files ", click on that, get the correct file up then double click on the photo and it will load above the attach files section. Then follow the instructions and experiment a bit !

And don't you just love the automatic door locks, 15 kmh and CLICK all the doors lock. When you stop again it does not unlock, I tried to remember to use the switch on the door which unlocks all doors .

Some photos taken by bm55, he is using the computer in a library and having problems uploading photos.

Here is what he has sent, without any silly comments from me.

Glad the trip went well, was a shame I was busy with work as it would've been good to take another road trip. I think you'll get on just fine with it BM55 - keep us updated.

And the usual caveat - let us know when it's up for sale.....

Thank you for uploading the photographs STUNO! I also just read about the tape infact being yours, had assumed it was the last owners, I have a note somewhere of your address, so can post it to you.

Will update the thread later on with some more pictures / how its all going etc, but don't want to start thinking about selling it quite yet!

Blimey, nice thread here guys. It does look utterly odd, being fully loaded with leccy toys, but on mingebag steelies.

Wow. I love your scenery, and the fact you can casually drop in the number of volcanoes you drive past into the conversation.

I didn't recognise the Centurion tank at Waiouru at first glance, it looks so different without its side skirts on. You can definitely see the family resemblance to the earlier Comet.

So the road trip went as planned..got back to Queenstown a few days back

The Mitsubishi clocked up some 4000kms on the trip, which must have been a shock to its system after generally travelling no more than 200kms in-between WOFs (the NZ equivilant of an MOT test), but it coped remarkably well

Heres a few photographs of our travels:

Was unsure of this one at the time, but found out its a Leyland P76, a car produced by the Australian subsidary of BL, also waiting for the ferry

As some backround infomation, the museum was in the former assembly plant of BL in New Zealand

Which explained why the autoshite beige Austin Princess was a central part of the collection:

The cars were assembled from kits

Excellent ! My SD1 was built in that Museum factory, and it was pretty well hand-built due to the low volume, and it showed in the finish and watertightness. Surprised at Mt Cook being cold? look how far below the summer snow-line you are. Queenstown will be just like home when it gets cold. Where were the Austins, one of hose old mining towns on the coast ?

Looking forward to more of course !!!

Love the pics, looks a great place to be cruising round.

How's the camping btw? Campsites look decent enough, but I'm thinking you wild camped once or twice there. If so, how does that go over there?

My Mum’s a kiwi (from Masterton – still got a lot of family there) and I’ve been over twice and am currently saving to go back a third time (which will be when the British Lions tour in 2017). I’ve also been around that museam a couple of times and eaten some food-of-the-Gods blue cod on the shores of Lake Taupo.

I had allowed myself to forget what a beautiful country it is, thank you for the pictures.

  • Oh, come off it. Those last pics are just ridiculous. OK, OK, just one last question before I emigrate. Do they have women and beer there?

The women are topless all year round and the beer is free...

And to bring the conversation back to sensible !

There are a few welcomes awaiting you in the shite family when you get here taff.

And bm55's museum find early Mazda is a very peculiar beastie.  The product of a union between GM/Holden and Mazda in the mid 1970's which produced that, the Mazda Roadpacer http://mrec.rotary.net.nz/articles/roadpacer.htm which really carved itself a place in motoring history.

There are spots called freedom camping sites which are designated by local councils. They generally seem to have a basic toilet and a tap, for perhaps the equivilant of 5 pounds a night (they leave an honesty box). Camping wild comes at a risk of a $200 fine.

If I remember correctly, the Mazda AP came at the brink of a fuel crises and only around 800 were produced, with very few surviving. Perhaps the RX8 will follow suit, with only a handful left in muesums in years to come?

I think the Austins were located somewhere on SH7 on the way to Greymouth, but can't find the town now. I'll have another look

An update showing some of the places visited since last time:

Abel Tasman, up in the north of the South Island. There are a number of trails you can do in the National park there.

Along the way to the northernmost point of New Zealand, near Hatfields Beach.

At the foot of 90-mile beach in Northland. Wasn't long on the beach as didnt want to get stuck! If you have a 4WD you can infact drive most of the beach upto the northernmost tip of the country called Cape Reinga

Parked up on a Kiwi fruit farm, tough work with long hours. The Ford Cortina Estate parked beside the Mitsubishi belonged to one of the contractors so imagine he would have been quite weathly, but still drove a battered old Cortina. New Zealand must be some kind of mecca for shitters' as this kind of thing happens all the time.

Really enjoyed this thread on different levels....Most people know that the Isle of Wight is regarded as England in Miniature, but it looks like NZ can boast of being the World in Miniature. So much variety! What I particularly like is stuff like this Mitsu against the backdrop of A40 Somersets in local colour schemes - strangely familiar with a touch of the exotic. I am no great traveller but I wouldn't mind waking up there one day.
