SORN?

Have DVLA been playing again?

I thought this was a rolling 12 months -SORN today, valid for 364 days.

However- seems not.

I received one of their usual 'acknowledgement' letters today for a BX Gti, I needed to redo.

Cos I'm a 'cussed git- I send in handwritten forms to DVLA, figuring that if they want to inconvenience me, I'll return them the favour.

I decided to read one I got back today.

Dated 10th December, it confirms SORN from 24th November, valid to 31st October!

Thats 3 weeks short-a 49 week year!

So I rang to query. In short, it seems ito be their latest little idea to end at the previous month end, thereby 'regularising' the system.

So -I then explained ownership of a large brood, with a Sasco Year Planner now employed to chart MOT's, tax etc etc.

If I ran it 1Year to 23rd November, before re-sorning, would I then be eligiblefor a 'late fine'?

Nice lady couldnt /wouldnt confirm (or deny) -which probably means'''not yet'' -but you can be sure its coming. 11month Sorns a possibility hereon

Another potential financial nightmare to keep your eyes open for, guys.

What a rip. I wonder what the practical difference is for them if a SORN renews on the 24th of the month or the end of a month. None I imagine.... fiddling for the sake of it.Why not renew all your sorns on-line one afternoon, then they'll all be due at the same time, that way you won't miss their made-up deadline date.

Nice work DVLA, striving for customer excellence as always! The whole SORN system is utterly ludicrous, especially when you are fined when you fail to re-SORN something! It's not like you're giving them any money, can't it just be assumed that you still want to keep it SORN? It'd save everyone a fair bit of hassle, it's just nonsense.

ALL IN ONE GO? It would take days- and I might miss one? What about additions over the year. Iits like a bloody military exercise now.

Yeah do em all at once, it only takes a minute on the internet so you'll have all yours done in an evening. Do it on Mrs_Bickles birthday, that way you won't forget! She'll love it too.

Does that work? I thought you could only renew it within the same contraints as tax discs, i.e. not more than 2 weeks before it's due, or whatever it is now. I've got a few vehicles on SORN and it would be useful if they were all 1 January or something.Incidentally, I'd rather have the bother of SORN than the alternative, which according to the motor press of the 1990s was "continuous licensing" - i.e. then need to keep the car taxed even when it was under resto, or they'd cancel the log book and you'd have to put it through an identity check before getting another V5 for it.

dunno if you are supposed to do it or not, but I have done it before. Just go online with the number off your logbook, and bingo.

You can SORN by phone with the reminder too, it's great, the call takes less time than it would to get to my local post office. The only downside is I don't get to see the small lass with the big bust that works at the PO :cry:

Nope, I recently bought a crashed MX5 as a donor. Went to declare it SORN, and DVLA says it's taxed 'till end of Jan. Declared SORN anyway, computer seemed to accept that, although I haven't received conformation through the post yet.The car didn't come with a tax disk, so I assume it is doing sterling duty in the window of a Nissan Bluebird minicab somewhere - I can't be arsed to chase for 1 month's rent...

On ebay at the moment is an "apparently" unused Eunos Roadster bodyshell and running gear sans engine and gearbox that was on Blackpool front for 10 years as part of a Sega video game. Having looked at the pictures I think it was used once over - seems very odd that Sega would buy an orange Eunos, strip out the engine but leave everything else and plumb in a video game. Last time I looked was £180.

Sounds similar to the original Leeds University driving simulator - a Rover GTI missing certain oily bits. "Dismantled" circa early 2006, i.e. because they'd built the room around the car they had to take an angle grinder to what was probably the best condition 3-door R8 bodyshell on the planet :(

An engineless Astray was on the bay recently, ex NHS, used for driver mobility tests or something.

I've seen that game. I'm sure the shell was pretty fucked with a decade's worth of sticky chav kids crawling all over it, not to mention spending its life within sight of the sea.
