A little update,

Still no answer from numerous  Emails so decided to search a little farther a field and first seller in Germany answered Email instantly with yes he speaks English,

Is it the same procedure buying from Germany as France then?

No, you need to buy export plates if you want to drive the car as I think the registration isn't transferable or something ... I looked in to it last year and it was a pain, but I wanted to use the car over there for a bit before coming home. If you were going over and A-framing or trailering the car back it shouldn't be too complicated.... I think M_Bickle or pshome should be able to advise better

I would chance an A-frame in France or Belgium, but for some reason I wouldnt dare in Germany

took a Bond Minicar to the Harz mountains on a straight bar!

nae bother frae Scotland tae Germany

no A frame shenanigans its a trailer job as car not road legal,

No a framing in Deutschland. No dollies, either. ( unless it's VERY dark and VERY close to the border!)

On the few occasions I've bought a German sicky, I've had it delivered to the Dutch border, either by the owner or a local( to him) transport company.

Or persuade the owner to leave the plates on , till you get home, then post them back.

One in 100 may agree to this.

Hi,
An export plate can be obtained in Germany without problems...

Your car only needs a valid TÜV (mot) Certificate. In the DVLA office (Zulassungsstelle) you can register it as export.

Export plate insurance is usually sold at the places that do the plates, usually in the DVLA office building itself. The plate has a date stamped on it - showing when the insurance runs out- usually 14 days.

So what you need is:
- some kind of valid identifcation
- the car's documents including valid mot
- export plate insurance (can also be bought cheaper on ebay)

Not that hard really :)

So if its a trailer job then is a piece of pish?

I take it the import paperwork is exactly the same being within the EU ?

Posted

Agreed Daniel ,that's a fly out, drive nice car back..

Sadly, that tends not to be the Autoshite way..

Most I look at don't have a TUV, and would need a stack of work to get one. And if it did, would I have the nerve to turn up, equipped with just a handful of tools, and drive it back?

Posted

^ Well I wouldn't anymore as Scotlands a bit to far and my nerves are ageing badly, on the other hand would the RAC transport a broken down car with foreign plates?

Any day.

Yes, if you take out European recovery cover with your export plate insurance.

Be quick, regulations will change. Right now you don't need TÜV for a Kurzzeitkennzeichen (5 day short term registration).

Beginning April 1st, you will only be allowed to drive to the next control station if you have no TÜV.

The current location of the car (sellers residence) will be written into the papers, no lame excuses when you happen to be stopped by the stewards.

Optionally buy the car within a few miles of the border, i dont think anybody cares about that mention in the papers outside Germany.

Otherwise nothing changes. If the car has TÜV, all you need is to pay insuance (dont buy it anywhere near the registration office, its much cheaper on line or at any insurance company office), present the car papers and purchase contract and you will get the plates on the spot. Insurance is about 40€, administratiive fee is 10 to 15 depending on the city, plates cost 15 to 20 a pair. Look a bit around, there are usually several shops making the plates and a few steps down the road youn get them at half the price.

P.S. "Schutzbrief", full road side assistance including towing etc. for the 5 days all of europe  is about 5€ extra when you buy the insurance.

post-3747-0-58220300-1424384203_thumb.jpg

post-3747-0-97592600-1424384294_thumb.jpg

once out of the ferry port we turned left and headed up north, French motorways empty even at 10am.

post-3747-0-30994200-1424384346_thumb.jpg

not much in the way of old tat on the motorways but did spot this old patrol being worked.

post-3747-0-96302800-1424384746_thumb.jpg

passed though a few towns that looked like this,

post-3747-0-92429400-1424385590_thumb.jpg

then as it started to get dark we set tom to find us a hotel and followed directions, we wound up heading up into the hills until we came into a village, this was like a scene out of the wickerman as people where walking towards us in fancy dress,  many waved to us wearing clown, animal and devil heads it wouldn't have been so bad if we hadn't then stopped just around the corner at toms chosen digs,

Into the hotel and asked the lady if they had any rooms fully expecting the no chance response but no tom was right,  a quick shower then down for lunch which was excellent,   about 10pm my eyelids decided they where made of lead so of to the room and turned on the TV to find top gear so sleep was delayed for another hour.

Day one and a little under 700 miles and 4 country's

just round the corner from the hotel, bet this has seen some track time.

post-3747-0-93335000-1424387342_thumb.jpg

post-3747-0-28059200-1424387973_thumb.jpg

Tom still hasn't fully woken up yet so we tossed a coin on which way to go.

Then yet another fuel stop with some ghastly roadside lunch,

post-3747-0-53737600-1424463021_thumb.jpg

Another road sign.

post-3747-0-70809700-1424463102_thumb.jpg

Then we finally arrived at our destination and this was the drive, bloody steep as well.

post-3747-0-99681800-1424463239_thumb.jpg

The sellers neighbours house was quite nice.

post-3747-0-43189400-1424463118_thumb.jpg

When we climbed the Everest style drive this was the prise awaiting us.

post-3747-0-10902900-1424463186_thumb.jpg

yes yes I know its not to everyone's taste but well worth the effort and expense.

After filling out the relevant paperwork and handing over some folding we loaded up in front of the sellers house,

post-3747-0-23716500-1424463999_thumb.jpg

all strapped up and ready to role.

Decided to drop down into France and head towards Calais this time and more motorway driving, post-3747-0-58062100-1424464853_thumb.jpg

More strange towers with what looked like mobile phone equipment on top.

post-3747-0-49176300-1424464947_thumb.jpg

Yet another stop and four transporters full of new cyclist hater Audis.

post-3747-0-40913500-1424464834_thumb.jpg

Another toll barrier and more expense.

post-3747-0-43605400-1424464930_thumb.jpg

A quick check of the fuel computer shows a reasonable mg for towing.

post-3747-0-47153700-1424466762_thumb.jpg

This time I remembered the petrol station shot, Johnny foreigner must have thought I was mad,

post-3747-0-48817400-1424465023_thumb.jpg

we where due to sail at 11.30am on Wednesday but since we had tried to call half a dozen sellers with not one answering we decided to try for an earlier ferry.  after a strange call to the ferry ticket seller lady we ended up with a 12.30am sailing, due to the flexi ticket allowing a 4 hour spread we headed for the 8.30 ferry and we arrived at the front of the line.

post-3747-0-32807900-1424465093_thumb.jpg

After a bite to eat and a wonder around the ferry we arrived back in blighty,

I can safely say I have never seen so many trucks in one place the port was crammed full of them, we passed loads of trucks heading north,

post-3747-0-07199300-1424466026_thumb.jpg

No more pics as it was dark so I settled in for the long drive home.

Arrived home around 5am and a quick shower and a couple of hours kip before washing a 1000 miles of road dirt of the scrote and putting it to bed.

post-3747-0-44037100-1424466402_thumb.jpg

A little over 1650 miles

Ferry £162 plus £11 to change to earlier sailing

Fuel £367

Road tolls £62

B&B £65

Food loads of money

This was the first time and hopefully not the last so what have I learnt?

French motorways are expensive,

French people do not answer the phone or I would have had a colt to drive home as well,

The driving standards are much much better than over here,

The roads are in a far better state than here,

I want to go again next week.

Excellent buy that, looks every bit a honey. Much cooler with 4 doors too, with added benefit of repelling goons who think you care about bubble arches and Britain First style outrages.

mexico wide Steels are here already :-D

It is the mates trailer, its a 3.5 ton tipper and once raised slightly cars drive straight on, the pickups are now only rated at 2.7 so not many of them can legally tow it either.  the sierra sapphire was a very tight fit on it the wheels where right in the corner with quite an overhang,

I have three trailers which will all be for sale very shortly.
