Scenic temperature problems

Any advice on this?

My sister has a 1999 Scenic 1.9 Dti. Its always been slow to warm up.

Anyway, suddenly yesterday the temp needle started going up within seconds of starting, and will sometimes go right up to max. The engine itself is not overheating at all. This would suggest the sender is probably dud? It is mounted on the thermostat housing. Unplugging it drops the needle to zero.

Also, it appears that the rad fans no longer work. The fans and relays themselves are fine, but they dont seem to be getting a signal. I tried shorting out the sender on the radiator but it did nothing. Are they connected in some way to the other sender?

I suppose changing the sender is the next step. Looks like a right nobber of a job.

Some googling didnt come up with much but some folk have had problems with the gauge itself failing.

Coolant temp sensor.

There's a bleed screw on top of the thermostat housing, try that first to make sure it's not just an airlock causing all the electrical weirdness.

You can remove the sensors with the housing in situ. It's a fairly straightforward job if you remove the air filter and turbo pipes, and the sensors are fairly cheap.
