The worlds most ungrateful Land Rover

Yes, from the 90/110 engines, which the 2052/2286 is the parent engine of. A Chain design converted to belt. I am in the process of gathering the correct parts to convert a 2495 NAD to chain drive with a vertical DPA pump. I don't wish to chop my galvanised chassis up to gain 12bhp. I also don't want a turbo.

I'm thinking from your description that even if the battery was connected backwards, all the motor would do would be spin backwards and not throw out to engage, right?

On the train of thought that it's considerably more likely the battery was put on backwards than the 0.000001% chance there's a backwards starter motor on it. It's not a Fiat 850.

Regardless of the starter issues n' that, the bearings would have been fucked within 1000 miles regardless of how smoothy everything else went.

My friend spends TOP DOLLA on Land Rover parts and they only last about 5% longer than Britpart branded stuff. Suggestion: all Land Rover parts are shit quality.

Battery reversal does not reverse a starter motor UNLESS it is one of those tiny modern jobbies with a permanent magnet field rather than field( the stationary) windings.

To join in the argument about The feasibility of this starter running backwards: electrically definately possible, it is only neccessary to reverse the connection to the field windings, or to the brushes, either will do. mechanically: only requires that the two parts of a Bendix designed for the opposite rotation be also fitted. Lucas starter Bendix's exist for both directions but have identical splines for the motor shaft therefore I see no reason why such an incorrect combination could not have been made at the starter rebuilders.

Ah. I'm used to permanent magnet field motors.

Agreed that mirror image parts are available, but of course it would also need to have been coincidentally wired up wrong too! And we all check parts for correct specification before fitting, right?? Well I know I do, as it saves me time if there's an issue.

Can I just get this straight... I am not that much of a tit that I could manage to hook up a battery the wrong way round without even taking it out of its cradle!

I only assume that in the starter motor rebuild shop they discovered that the pinion didn't engage when bench testing the unit, so they reversed the connections.

P.S It is now fully functioning as a vehicle and has been helping the local police today in the SNO KAHOS

I had one of those, a 2.5 with a 2.25 pump and timing chain etc, I can't remember where it went - Skoze??

No but it was the same as his, I'm struggling to remember where it came from now but I never used it.

It's not the one I picked up off Westy is it? Cos I thought that was ex-JAW/Turner at one time in it's dim past....

I was trying to blag another 2.5 NAD on FB, and replied sharpish, but it seems to have been claimed! I was going to do two!
