I like the big RWD saloons from the 1970s and 1980s, but then I'm a bit odd :)

My first 'decent' car was a Toyota Crown. Not the now desirable estate, just the saloon and I LOVED it to pieces. It did get a load of neglect and covered huge mileages over a couple of years. In that time, it needed new rear brakes, an exhaust and...

An engine!

The engine was my fault.

I may have mentioned before that when I was young, I was a complete mechanical luddite with zero mech sympathy and no clue about maintenance. It froze while driving it back along the motorway at about 80 and I just kept going. It had no anti-freeze... It broke a piston (it much later turned out) but kept going fine just used to chuck loads of oil out of the breathers, so I strapped a bog Coke (type of thing) bottle to the bulkhead and piped all the breathers into it, then I'd pour the oil back into the engine! It didn't have a heater anymore, which was a bit of a chore seeing as it was bloody artic that winter.

It wasn't money that stopped me getting it fixed, it was time. I left for work 6 in the morning and got home at 10 at night and did that 7 days a week. It really didn't leave much time....

It eventually got a new engine, supplied and fitted by the Toyota garages. I cannot remember the bill, but it must have been HUGE. From then on, I started to take more notice of things and became Toyotas best customer with that car: it was always being serviced or repaired!

It was brilliant, central locking, pas, auto, fridge in the boot and air con in the car, tinted glass, electric windows and the funkiest rear lights of any car EVER! Remember, this was back in the early seventies and the only cars that matched it on spec were things likes RR/Bentleys and Grosser Mercs.

I started lusting after the coupe version but never saw one for sale back then so traded it in for a new Toyota Corrolla '30' in met brown with cream interior. It was nice having a new car, but it wasn't a patch on the Crown and I missed it horrendeously. I bought a Datsun 280C, but that's another story (and crap!).
