Has it got anything to back up the miles? Pretty rare to find one with that low a mileage on it

Good Effort! Jags are for Winnars. Despite owning one of these fecking things I couldn't work out what it was. In my defence I've not had a coffee yet.

Oh I've seen it's a nice old Jag, quality purchase!

Nice, what's the grot level?

It appears to be solid:)

Door handle bollocls as per but has sills etc.

Ooo, Magnolia leather with red piping - an expensive option when it was new!

It's an absolute steal at that money if it isn't riddled with rust.

What's wrong with the doorhandles? - does it/do they work from the inside, but not the outside?

Aye it seems fairly well specced:)

Bodily looks very solid-even the bootlid/striker plate are solid

Drivers door doesnt work from the outside-car came with a replacement handle.

Drivers rear doesnt open from outside either-need to source that one.

The most annoying thing about the glove box is the leather handbooks holder won't quite fit into it and needs to be persuaded!

The radiator looks like it needs a new 'cooling pack cradle'. These seem to rot quite badly on the XJ40 - though oddly, not on all cars. Yours is a late car so will need part number CCC7173 - now superseded by the X300 version MNA4188AA, which is identical. These are still available, but ridiculously expensive.

This new aftermarket one isn't identical (some of the detail has been simplified) but it should do the job: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/JAGUAR-X300-LOWER-RADIATOR-MOUNTING-PANEL-MNA4188AA-PARTS-AND-SPARES-/151494063582

The radiator fits into four mounting bushes which sit in the upper and lower cradles. These go orange and rot over time. The part number is MNA4241AB, still available from jaguar, at £5.55+VAT each. http://www.jaguarclassicparts.com/uk/part/MNA4241AB

Other companies sell them too, of course.

Aftermarket http://www.jagspares.co.uk/Manners/partdetailalternate.asp?partno=MNA4241AB%2A

Gen Jag:http://www.jagspares.co.uk/Manners/partdetailalternate.asp?partno=MNA4241AB

These look slightly different - rubber instead of foam glued on metal. Maybe they wont rot?

http://britishparts.co.uk/products/7223-radiator-mount-MNA4241AB

You may also find the lower air conditioning condenser bushes are also dust now. Part number for the lower ones is CBC1788 . http://www.sngbarratt.com/PartSearchResults.aspx?partno=CBC1788* at £2.20+VAT each. You will need two. The upper bush is CBC1448, http://www.sngbarratt.com/PartSearchResults.aspx?partno=CBC1448but these seem to survive OK.

You need to remove the front spoiler to get at all this. It isn't difficult, but you will find all the fixings have rusted, so a screwdriver won't be much use with them!

On a late car, a non-functioning door handle is not always down to outer door handle failure. The handles are a much better design than the digi-dash cars. It may just be a matter of lubricating them all and perhaps a bit of adjustment. I lost the left hand rear one earlier in the year. It just needed lubricating to fix it.

If you plan to keep the car any length of time, then it is well worth getting the official Jaguar workshop manual. These are really excellent and very detailed. There is nothing whatsoever they don't cover. Everything is taken step by step and well written, which makes tackling any job on the car possible, even by someone like me. Jaguar sell these on DVD. I highly recommend them!

I don't know if I am going mad, but I couldn't see the 4 litre XJ40 DVD. Here is the one for the 3.2, which is mostly identical (different automatic transmission)http://www.jaguarheritage.com/xj6-xj40-32-litre-1990-94-jhm1171

Lastly, the Jaguar site is a very valuable resource: http://www.jaguarclassicparts.com/uk/jaguar-xj6-xj12-parts It details all the parts in the car, giving their part number.

Hopefully you're not posting on your phone and preparing to spend the night in the lovely Jag now you're stuck in it after total door handle failure! ;)

My late dad got stuck in his XJ40 once, but it was a 3.6 so no surprise! It was in 1987ish - and he had just got it. He gave a lift to an important business client who owned a Series 3 Daimler Double Six and wanted to see what the new fangled XJ40 was like. To my dad's horror, both the front door handles failed, so they had to climb out the back when they arrived. The fellow was a substantial unit, so my father was genuinely worried he would get stuck between the seats!

Here is a photo of the old beast from 1988, taken with a quality Instamatic.

Intention is to get over for a gander at this on the 27th or so, then i'll understand what is needing to be done.

So far we have:

Brake fluid leak

doorhandles

Cradle for radiator

clean interior

wash and inspect outer bodywork

These were taken prior to washing...

Looks no bad, eh!

The brake fluid leak appears to be the main Front to rear Line..

Are they available ready made, or am I going to need to form a new one?

Also, what is the best forum for the xj40's?

Though it's the only actual specific one I've found an no idea if it's any good. There's a FaceAche one as well, if you're on there.

There used to be a forum called 'jaglovers' IIRC. There you go:http://www.jag-lovers.org/

Join the JEC. Nice bunch and a good monthly mag. FJ treats all Jags of this era as 'classic' and give a discount for JEC members.

Please check the box section at the front of the sill/trailing edge of the front wheel arch. There should be a small rectangular plastic cover which happily traps mud in a small box section. Please inspect ASAP and jetwash the fecker out. Then spray with any kind of wax based substance which will protect the section from rusting out. Repeat on t'other side.  Make sure the boot smells sweet and not musty. If the wiper doesn't self park, it is down to a little microswitch which takes about 10 mins to sort out. Make sure the sections that the jack fits into are clean and rust free.

The fuel filler flap can be accessed by a little gizmo in the boot if needed. Usually sticky 'lecky arials are just cacked up. Never wipe downwards, only up.

If I remember anything else I will post.

My first Jaaag was a 3.6 Sovvie (1988), second was the 2.9 (shite), then followed 2 x 4.0 XJ6 versions.

Nice cars. First car I had that cracked 135MPH (on a private stretch of motorway) and had cruise control.

Erroneous 'lightbulb failure' messages can be simply down to dirty connections or shite quality bulbs. If yours does not have foglights, there should be some blanking plugs on the end of the connectors.

Try and waxoil the front lip of the bonnet and the rear lip of the bootlid. They can rust like buggery.

Thanks for the tips- appears I'm registered on jag-lovers, and have just registered on xj40.com.

I'll get in about it a bit more later in the week, and have a look at the bits you have advised!

Excellent.

They are great cars and even when the suspension is slightly tired, drive lovely. A true 'drivers car'.

Top purchase.

A quick check on the Jaguar website suggests the part is still available.CCC4881 is £26.95+VAT  http://www.jaguarclassicparts.com/uk/part/CCC4881

Check it is the right part though!

One useful point to remember with Jaguar parts bought from Jaguar Classic parts, is that you can pick them up from your local jaguar main dealer. If you do this, you don't have to pay any postage/courier charges, which can be significant on large, heavy or bulky items.

Some main dealers offer a discount scheme for classic Jaguars - which can mean you may also get 10% or whatever off the price of the part too. I'm not sure whether these are still open to new owners though, since with the expansion of the Jaguar range in recent years to include more mass market models than the old '40, the ethos of Jaguar dealers has changed.

The forums to join are www.xj40.com and Jag-lovers http://forums.jag-lovers.org/

Both are excellent forums. Jag-lovers sadly, isn't very busy these days. The problem is the incredibly old fashioned forum, which is actually an email based list. The archives of the Jag-lovers site are astonishing though - the best I have seen on any car site. Provided you can work the search facility (easier said than done) there is nothing imaginable that hasn't been covered. The site is still worth visiting though and still has some of the most knowledgeable posters out there. It is my first port of call for very technical problems.

XJ40.com is also an excellent site. Again, it is very 'hands-on', with most posters there maintaining their own cars and many able to undertake full all-inclusive restorations at home. Many there are running their jag on a tight budget. It is a friendly site, though at times rather inclined to drift off topic. It's not unlike Autoshite in some ways; many members seem to have various other unusual and perhaps unappreciated cars. I am on the site - username 'david'.

Most of the other Jaguar related sites are not really aimed at the XJ40. Jaguarforum.co.uk doesn't even have an XJ40 section. I joined there and someone told me to get an X300! :-P  The site is best for the X-Type on.

The American version www.jaguarforums.com is far better than the British version for the XJ40. There is an XJ40 section whch though not busy, does have several experts who will help you. They're all on Jag-lovers too though!

The line on mine seems to run up the passenger side bulkhead, and then over to the top union on the M/C- it looks a bit different to that shown in the illustration. You can see mine in the attached pics
