Heater-fan working - not working - working - etc.

Hi!

I need your help with my newly acquired Pajero V6. Its heater-fan is giving me trouble. Especially now in this cold and damp weather, it would be nice if it worked reliably.

The problem: The heater-fan is not always working. Sometimes it works from starts and cuts out during driving, sometimes it keeps quiet from start and suddenly starts to blow during driving. During my last longer drive in it, it stopped working after ~ 20 minutes, started again after some time, stopped again and the last few minutes until home it worked again. That´s quite nerve-wrecking because when it stops blowing warm air into the cabin, it´s not only getting cold inside the car, the windscreen starts to show condensation too, so I cant see where I am going anymore. Not good at all.

There has been a pre-heater from Webasto installed in the car until it got removed some weeks ago. May the problem with the heater-fan be linked with that?

I really need your help because without the problem being sorted, I can´t drive the car properly now.

Thanks a lot!

Probably...

Now I´m off to the garage so check all the electronic connections around the heater-fan. The fuse is fine.

I would suggest enthuisiastically belting the living crap from the general area of the problem.........it won't fix it, but you may find it cathartic...............................

^^^ That.

My Landrover does exactly the same. A well aimed kick to the side of the heater box gets its started again.

I would suggest checking for a loose connection to the fan motor, then if thats ok getting the motor itself out and cleaning it up - its probabkly full of years worth of dust a filth. A quick clean up of carbon brushes and commutator would probably do it a lot of good.

Thats what I would do if I wasnt so lazy.

Oh and maybe check the switch wiring too and the resistor pack which controls the speeds. if its rusted up then that wont help either.

Have had trouble with this on my Minor, VW T3 and the 190E.   I suspect in all cases its old grease around the bearings caking up in the cold.   The one on the Morris is easier to get to so some well aimed Plus Gas (insert your favourite penetrative lube, Missus, here) has done the trick.  The Merc one was simply replaced with a new unit because Mrs Rocker pays for the repairs on the car :-D .     Unfortunately Hanover constructed the entire van around the Volkswagen heater so that's a dash out, drop steering column piss blood job....Suspect the Pajero one wont be easy either.....
