mat_the_cat Posted February 11 Author Posted February 11 I've replaced all the seals bar the one for the 'throttle' spindle. In my case the leak was evident, so I thought I'd best replace the easy to do seals at the same time, but shied away from that one! chodweaver 1
chodweaver Posted February 12 Posted February 12 Did you do all that in situ, or make timing marks, lock it all up and take the pump off the engine?
mat_the_cat Posted February 14 Author Posted February 14 I took it off, as the seal for the timing advance lever is on the engine side of the pump. chodweaver 1
mat_the_cat Posted March 9 Author Posted March 9 Probably the thing showing the most amount of wear (unsurprisingly) is the driver's seat. Trouble is, this style was only fitted to the facelift versions during the last 3 years of production, so finding a better condition one had so far eluded me. VW Classic Parts were at one stage selling the long distance seat option, complete with built in suspension. But at 1000 Euros I decided to pass on that! I'm admin for one of the LT Facebook pages, so have to approve a fair few posts - one of which was a dirty but intact looking seat. For £25!! Better still it wasn't too far from a journey I had to make anyway. Cleaning it was oddly satisfying. And after about a week of running the dehumidifier it was looking dry. These have to be the easiest seat in the world to remove - just a single thumb wheel. Downside is you have to remove it to do any work on the engine except oil and coolant fills! It's a bit more comfortable too, and just makes the cab a nicer place to be. chodweaver, loserone, Brigsy and 15 others 18
Brigsy Posted March 9 Posted March 9 I can imagine the new seat being quite an improvement over the original. The foam looks much better.

There's a couple, but this is the one I'm an admin of. https://www.facebook.com/groups/24899769420 As to whether people know their onions; yes there are definitely some who do, but a lot who don't!
mat_the_cat Posted Wednesday at 16:18 Author Posted Wednesday at 16:18 Disaster this morning! Failed alternator belt, which then took out the power steering belt. Fortunately had a spare of both, but no obvious reason why it failed other than age. It was ok at the service last year, and it doesn't *feel* like it's been on that long. But will check the service record to see.
Zelandeth Posted Wednesday at 17:02 Posted Wednesday at 17:02 Just the plague that seems to be modern rubber? Or being V belts, been sitting on some wholesalers shelf for the last ten years? Brigsy 1

Looking at the packet I put the previous belts in (just in case), one was dated 2017, so you could be right... It's a kick up the arse to get on with installing an electric PAS pump, which in turn will free up the space for an AC compressor.
