Shud of bought a MGEF

Well as you might or might not know last month I paid some money for a well looked after midship runabout 2.

I didn't know much about them when I went to have a look, I thought they would be reliable, well that was a amateur's mistake.

Many many known engine problems, from oval bores to sticking oil control rings to these silly pre catalytic converters that disintegrate and then the engine ingests the insides, killing it.

So anyhow it had a full history, never missed one, always before it was due, so I got home, happy that it should be ok, I changed the oil when I got it anyway, proper 5w-30 it needs, spent half a morning taking the manifold off to get to these pre cats, that then you pick, blow, bash or blast out, bit like taking the swirl flaps off a bimmer, except these are in the exhaust manifold.

1000 odd miles in good, no oil usage.

1750 miles in, planned trip away to Norfolk, oil level good (checked weekly). Proper hooned it all the way there and back, a good 400 mile round trip.

Check oil when home, NONE, WHERES IT ALL GONE!!!!

Only registered on the very edge of the dipstick, I check again, maybe operator error. No, still not there.

So put some in this morning, take it up to full, blast it round to see if it disappears, see my mate at his garage, get it on the ramps, no leaks and his emissions tester shows lovely clean readings.

So I drop the oil when I get back after flinging a flushing snake oil mixture in to maybe see if its the control rings sticking and its burning it away (no visible smoke out the back) put in the exact amount there meant to have and gonna see how it goes.

I know some cars e.g smarts can burn there oil quite readily while giving no indications or this?? just seems odd how it did a good 1500 miles and it didn't drop a mm on the dipstick.

And shirley they can take a good thrash now and then without giving up and dying a slow oil using death.

Shud or bought a mgef...............

Those 1ZZ engines love a drink of oil when revved, they're almost as bad as rotaries for it !

Back in the day, an acquaintance bought a 1ZZ-engined Celica brand new. He was a total lunatic and drove it like he stole it from day 1. In the first year of ownership, he managed to blow up THREE engines due to oil starvation. To our surprise, Toyota replaced the engine on all three occasions under warranty ! I bet they weren't happy about it, though...

My 1AZ-FSE Avensis liked a drink, about a litre every 2000 miles. Still it got to 206k and was fine.

Those maniverters are the work of the devil. Rather than smashing the innards you can buy spacers for the aftercat oxygen sensors.

Total loss lubrication systems mean never having to drain the sump.

At least you know to check it regularly, you'll be fine.
