Peugeot 106 / Citroen Saxo - lightweight, which means ok on fuel in London traffic, and narrow, which means manoeuvrable in rush hour traffic. Fun to drive at low speed.

How many seats do you need. Buy a MK1 Mx5 (or a mk2 if you must), now, and sell it at a lack of loss in the spring. Brilliant heaters, and you can always put the top down for comic effect when it's frosty. (I have driven 100 miles with now on the ground with the top down. Just need a scarf and ear muffs)
