Funny noise on startup audi 1.8 20v

Hi I wonder if someone could help me or has had a similar problem with the 1.8 20v engine which is in my 2000/1 B5 A4.

My engine on startup makes a funny noise which I can only describe as sounding like a whirring noise, a bit like putting I piece of card in some moving wheel spokes.

The noise only appears to happen on startup for about a second and the car runs great and doesn't use any oil or water etc and is relatively low mileage at 57000.

The thing is my previous A4 didn't make this noise although it was a 1.6 so was only a single cam 8 valve engine.

Have a google for Audi Secondary Air Injection Pump (SAI) which I think you can isolate for the time being, see if this stops the weird noise on start up ...?

Thanks very much for the help.

Yes it's the Vag 1.8 20v , I will see about disconnecting the secondary air injection pump as isn't it some kind of weird emission shite which acts like a hair dryer to trick the emissions police into thinking the car can't kill kittens on start up.

I doubt it needs it anyway as it wouldn't be needed at mot time as the engine will already be warm.

Sticking bendix on the starter motor? Seems to affect a lot of VAG stuff.

This. Sounds like a whirring that slows slightly before stopping.

Aux drive belt/adjustment/tensioner?

Tensioner or similar by the sound of it. Tried watching aux drive belt as you start it? or listening in engine bay?

Use a long screwdriver as a 'stethoscope' on a bolt or mounting near the belts/cambelt area.

Cheers Red for the advice I had my suspicions that it may be tensioner related but kept trying to tell myself it might be something cheaper to repair, so I guess it's the front off the car and a new cambelt while I'm at it.

Change the water pump at the same time if there's any suspicion whatsoever that it's still on the original. If so OMG it could phail ANY MINUTE.

I've just been in touch with the previous owner and it looks like the car is on the original belt so hopefully fingers crossed I can get it done before it grenades the engine.

I start a new job tomorrow and need it daily for the next 3 months till I get put off work so I may just take it easy and get it done in 3 months time.

Also the mot and tax will run out at the same time as this contract finishes so I better start saving now.

I wonder could someone give me a rough price on what it should cost to do the belt and pump plus tensioner.

I think about £320 - £350 all in at most decent garages, some might do it for slightly less but these are based on quotes I got for a timing belt, water pump and tensioner on my old 1999 Golf 1.8 20v
