Bren Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 Have they changed the material that they make them from? Top hose on my Sd1 had a dribble when the motor was running - even when nipped up tight. I got a secondhand item and had the same problem, on both the end ahead of the jubilee clip has flared a huge amount - I have trimmed it down and put it back on, now to see if it works. I noticed that where it had flared it was very soft and difficult to cut. I will splash out on a new one when it is roadworthy, but not spending £42 + vat on one from ripoff brothers ( well known rover parts specialist in Lincolnshire).
mercrocker Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 ALLRUBBAIZSHITE2DEY....Minor top hoses - chocolate. Minor bottom hoses - arse-fuckery-don't-fit-properly chocolate. Even the improved* silicone stuff peels like a frigging banana if you try and stop the leak with another turn of the jubilee drive. You are honestly better off with 30 year old NOS autojumble stuff that's been in 29 years of Beaulieu sun and jammed underneath an MGB gearbox for six of those. I wouldn't expect the forty sov alternative to be any better. Its shit like this that will finally put us off the road - does the gubbermint have a hand in this, I wonder? Junkman and Rusty_Rocket 2
Junkman Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 Have they changed the material that they make them from? Yep. It's shit from China now. mercrocker and inconsistant 2
Des Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 Don't be tempted to touch any any of the Kevlar reinforced bollocks, I splashed out on an expensive set some years ago and they were about as hard wearing as a skid mark on a toilet bowl, the paper labels on them survived quite well however, so no quibbles there. If you find yourself with no choice but to use one, superglue them on then the hoseclip wont need as much tightening, and I wonder if binding them in tape might help. Or just make your own from toilet roll centres coated in marmite, maybe hollow out a black pudding, they'll be way more durable. Conrad D. Conelrad, mercrocker and Junkman 3
Junkman Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 Also steer clear of that steel braided rubbish. It's intended for trailer queens only. And you know what we do with people having trailer queens, don't you... Squire_Dawson, mercrocker and Twiggy 3
Sigmund Fraud Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 As discussed before, all rubber parts (ooh... err...) are most unsatisfactory (ooh... err... hmm...) nowadays. Hoses of any type (cracked and leaking three month old fuel hose, anyone ?), suspension bushes, top mounts, CV boots, the bloody lot ! Even tyres seem to perish far sooner than they used to ! Buying new old stock is a brilliant solution for most parts, but rubber can age quite badly and your 1960s 'Buy British' MOWOG hoses may not last much longer than the modern WangQing Rubber Co. LTD equivalents. THERE IS NO HOPE
Junkman Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 It's actually no wonder. With every leased shitbox weighing two tons and thus rolling on 385/35ZR19 tyres, demand for rubber increased dramatically. However, there are only so many rubber trees on this planet. DSdriver and Sigmund Fraud 2
inconsistant Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 Thank Goodness for all that crude oil then! Junkman 1
Magnificent Rustbucket Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 I fitted a load of new genuine Jaguar hoses to my Jag fairly recently. They seemed to be good quality - identical to the 20 year old originals. They're not made in UK any more, they're made in France now. Not particularly expensive either, I didn't think.
Squire_Dawson Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 they were about as hard wearing as a skid mark on a toilet bowl So pretty much permanent then? Junkman and inconsistant 2
Junkman Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 They're not made in UK any more, they're made in France now. Can't you buy at least Chinese quality*? mat_the_cat 1
willswitchengage Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 They should be the relevant SAE standard. Try a reputable manufacturer such as Goodyear or Continental. You should only need a basic rubber hose unless that element of your system is pressurised; I've just been repairing them on my motor-sickle and it's a doddle.
Junkman Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 They should be the relevant SAE standard. Try a reputable manufacturer such as Goodyear or Continental. Been there, done that, wiped up the mess. It's all the same tosh nowadays. If you just need to replace hose from the roll, go at least two grades higher than what is really specified, usually industrial grade. That doesn't help you any when you need moulded radiator pipes, though.
michael1703 Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 Jubilee clips aren't as strong nowadays either, I use Gates or known brand makes but the worms are weak as shite Sigmund Fraud and Junkman 2
Sigmund Fraud Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 Jubilee clips aren't as strong nowadays either, I use Gates or known brand makes but the worms are weak as shite +1, one of the reasons I am becoming quite a fan of spring clips. First time I used them I was convinced all the coolant would leak out in a matter of seconds, but they actually work brilliantly.
mercrocker Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 The hoses on my Cowley are old stock Marina items (has 1622 motor, Marina rad and expansion tank) and have probably been on the car since the mid 1980s. They are fine, no leaks, not perished and held up nicely when the fan belt snapped (another gripe) in the heat of a July day pulling a caravan. I was going to replace them as an insurance policy but I don't think I will bother. Was lucky enough to buy a wholesale box of various NOS jubilee clips when a local Lucas branch closed down. Everything new is shite.
forddeliveryboy Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 Jubilee clips aren't as strong nowadays either, I use Gates or known brand makes but the worms are weak as shite If your screwdriver was made before 1987.
DSdriver Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 Try wrapping some self amalgamating tape around the hose ends under the Jubilee clips and use half inch wide clips not the narrow shit. If that doesn't work what inside diameter are they? I have a couple of random lengths of marine exhaust hose which is designed for water cooled exhaust systems and needs to be good otherwise your boat sinks. I've got 30mm and 50mm inside diameter and just about to get some 40mm because sods law dictates that you have never got the size that you actually need.
