Having unilaterally decided your clear guilt, how long do you all think they will be able to resist the open opportunity to take the money, on the direct debit, without any further involvement by you?

 

I shall very much enjoy claiming the money back from my bank if they try that.

 

Because they've done it as a direct debit, they cannot change the amount without telling you first with enough time for you to reject the change. This is the "direct debit guarantee" firms have to read out by law if they're setting one up. If they don't follow the rules, your bank refunds you and then claim it back from the bad people.

 

Had they taken a card number, they can vary it as they wish; there's no way of cancelling it without asking them to cancel or getting a new card number. In that case I would not pay monthly.
