I can pick out a few details I really like on the 2002, but put it together as a whole and it just looks gawky and awkward. They're a car I never really understood the appeal of.

 

I wonder if that's why seemingly everyone modifies them?

Agreed. They only look okay as a Turbo or a very early stainless grille car without the side strips. The proportions aren't quite right and the E21 and E30 were much better.

I've often wondered why some cars are universally accepted as beautiful,is it just a case of the emperors new clothes?

For example one of these is lauded as one of Pininfarina's most elegant saloons the othe a bland euro barge that is one of his most boring

More like the result of a design student having a bad dream, having spent all day looking at old Bugattis and other grand old French stuff.

 

PS like your 2cv pickup for it's simple construction - is there a story waiting to be told?

Having stopped over on this green and pleasant land* for a quick vacation, I have noticed how Ford and Nissan seem to be competing for "Darth Vader's Helmet" in their design of the front end of their NotEscort and SnottyChildMover.

 

This design needs to stop

 

Goppingly ugly, though a mk3 Astra now looks even more out of place than it did when it was new. Especially in peeling/dull burgundy or that acid trip turquoise they did. Something wrong with the proportions of them all, the Astra looks tro much like a constipated hamster.
