OMG gas guzzler Yank tank: Bid accepted, car delivered!

Mrs Beard has given some positive comments about the car so looking good! Have this very morning taxed and insured the Mercury. Tax was no problem, did it online. Direct debit and monthly payments naturally. Insurance was a bit of a PITA though. Both Meerkat and the Opera singer websites went into meltdown when I entered the registration number! Performance Direct eventually agreed to insure it once I actually spoke to a person. Bit of a hoohar at first when asked if ' I had any experience of driving a left hand drive car ' . I said yes, but only in France and Spain. Not good enough. Needed to refer to insurers, call you back etc.

Got the call back an hour later and I am deemed worthy of being let loose on the roads whilst sat on the wrong side of the car. £141 fully comprehensive on classic policy.

As the car has one day left on the current MOT it seemed a waste not to drive it. So I did...

The battery has been off the car and put on an Optimate 4 charger since Saturday so reconnected it (fully charged) and went for a drive....

All as expected really. The speedometer displayed zero for about a mile or so, then joined the party. The transmission seemed to shift fine right from the outset though, counted one, two, three, four changes, fourth being around 40mph ish... Maybe having the battery disconnected for a couple of days cleared the fault codes?

Transmission got a bit jumpy on the way home, so maybe more fault codes. Basically just as described by Eddy.

Reverse sounded growly at first, but once the transmission warmed up it went quiet.

The central locking worked fine until the battery was removed, once reconnected it doesn't work. Just a matter of reprogramming something or other I suspect.

First impressions are good. Very comfortable, just as described by Eddy, a great project and a good introduction to American cars! Thanks Eddy!

Edit. When, and indeed if I get it properly sorted the first road trip will be back up to Barrow to load up with those superb meat and tater pies!

What's the plan for it then? Bung it in for mot or you going to keep it off the road for a bit to see if you can sort the speedo fault. It would be interesting to keep driving for a few days just to see what happens with the gearbox and speedo.

The current plan is to just take it in for another MOT then drive it locally. Basically to see if any pattern emerges with the speedometer/transmission fault. No plans for any long trips just yet, just sort of a fault finding thing.

^^ All part of the plan. Although doesn't seem brown or smelly..

change the fluid in the gearbox

We did think of that.  When we checked it, the level seemed to be fine and the fluid looked clean, so that's as far as we went.  It probably would be a wise precaution anyway.  Good luck!  And if you do come up here with it, you have to come and say hello!
