OMG T5 POWAH A68

Today was the BIG MOVE to Hexham. 90% of our clobber was already in the new gaff and we were waiting to actually move until the kids term finished in Edinburgh. So at 2.00pm we piled into an overloaded 850 T5 estate, just recommissioned and MOTd with the usual T5 advisory on the rapidly balding yokohamas up front.

Car behaved blindingly on the A68 and all thd gremlins....see the latest Scooter Alternator thread....seemed to have ironed themselves out. It's a superb vehicle for the A68 where you don't really want to be going much over 65 in most places due to blind summits, tractors, old giffers etc. But it helps having a car with serious OMG POWAH on tap to get the overtaking done when ypu get the opportunity. I've been driving the road mostly in the Big Jag for the last month and in my mum's hateful 1.6 xsara Picasso. ..A disgrace to the legacy of Andre Citroën. ...and both those vehicles have their challenges on a road like the A68. The T5 however was FUKIN ORSUM especially when you need the anchors. Loads of power even fully loaded ypu blip up to 80 plus without needing to engage sports in a few seconds.

We are holding onto it for the next few weeks but once the 52 plate Mondeo is back on the road and I've got Phils XM up from Devon next week it will be sadly going up for sale.

In the meantime towing duty as I need to bring the Lancia and the Dead CX as well as the caravan down from Edinburgh and 850s are splendid tow cars if you remember to watch the oil temperature.

An 850 T5 is immensely appealing; I would like a FWD workhorse for the winter and a T5 has to be the answer.

I am in negotiations with a fellow on the blue forum to acquire just such a beast.

I've only been in one twice.

Once was doing 120mph by the time we'd got to the bottom of a sliproad on "my private testtrack" (just outside Sheffield) with a 1.3 Polo engine in the boot. The second was being hit from behind at 30mph by a Seat Ibiza which crumpled like a damp paper bag, leaving the Volvo's towbar "slightly bent".

I think this has to be done. I was hankering after a 2.9 Cosseh Granada wagon of some flavour (probably a bugface Scorpio since they're ugly and cheap, and I'm ugly and skint) but these are faster, cheaper, less likely to cost lots of money, and have a guaranteed future value of being able to lob it over the border into the waiting SVM.

Congrats on the move!

Is there now actually a law, then, that says you have to give up your Volvos if you leave Scotland?

Yes, we exchange them for Xsara Picassos that have come north.
