I saw a modern version last summer, although I dont think it would do the 360 spin like the beetle.

 

 

I would guess that having the articulation point forwards of the rear axle would reduce snaking, but aside from that Im not seeing any advantages.

No, it was a spinning thing like the beetle one in the video.

Judging by the wonky angle, I would say it was designed for a smaller towcar.

Although it would appear that some of them are actually rigid close-coupled and open into the interior of the car.
