Drive down where?

Comprehension skills seriously lacking on my part. Also still getting to grips with this tele- radio, vision, internet stuff. Is it worth pitching a tent in your local park/using the iron horse to help free you of your unnecessarily large Martini stockpile?

Today Mark Webber finally upgraded again to Le Mans, after a more than 10-year relegation down to Formula 1.

One of the big attractions this year are without a doubt the new Corvettes.

A new Lotus LM P1-L was unveiled today.

The first preliminary qualifying results show two Porsches up front.

Isn't it weird, how those Stuttgarters can just look on for decades, occasionally utter something along the lines 'Rather interesting. Yes, kind of interesting, indeed', then suddenly come back and dominate the place out of the box? OK, this still won't make me a Porsche fan, but I admire their engineering and organisation capabilities.

It looks like Loic Duval's crash happened during the first qualifying, not testing/practice. Shows how hard Audi is pushing.

Qualifying results as of today are here: http://www.24h-lemans.com/en/news/le-mans-2014-the-results-of-the-first-qualifying-session_2_2_1746_15809.html

Am a massive fan of this and need to attend at some point. This year I shall be unashamedly cheering on Porsche-their history in the race has always enthralled me. Here's a cheeky vid from Audi welcoming them back...

As a poor person I shall be using the Autoshite approach to watching by watching the Eurosport stream here with the sound off

Thinking of Corvettes at le mans reminds me of this vid....

What isnt mentioned in the vid is that the lead 'vette was circulating an a reasonable position late on in the race. At the last scheduled stop a mechanic forgot to replace the cooling system filler cap. It lost most of its water and was running hot, the arcane rules meant it couldnt take on any more water for a certain time/ distance window- effectively the rest of the race. So the driver feathered the throttle all the rest of the way and every so often the car re entered the pits, and the engine bay was packed with ice from the canteen trailer, staying cool enough not to cook the engine yet satisfiy regs, it finished the race!

I am loving the yellow headlights some of the cars have giving it a proper french 'feel'.

And what is it with the Nissan / Robin reliant!!

Where they way ahead if their time?

Audi mechanics worked through the night to build up a brand-new No. 1 Audi R18 e-tron quattro following Loic Duval’s massive accident.
Work was completed by 8 a.m.
Marc Gene takes the place of Loic Duval, who should be released from hospital today.

More than one-third of the scheduled six hours of running time on Wednesday was eliminated due to red flags. In addition to the accidents from Duval and Fernando Rees (No. 99 Aston Martin), there were shunts for the Nos. 67 and 76 IMSA Performance Matmut Porsches, No. 41 Greaves Motorport Zytek-Nissan, No. 90 8Star Motorsports Ferrari and No. 37 SMP Racing Oreca-Nissan. All cars are expected to return for today’s final two qualifying sessions.

The ACO and Toyota have clarified the position of the Toyota TS040 Hybrid’s ERS braking system, which has been reported by some to be illegal. ACO Sporting Director Vincent Beaumesnil said Toyota’s system is “OK†by the rules. The FIA issued a clarification this week of what could be done with the braking systems. “We have read the regulations. Frankly some others need an explanation,†said Toyota Racing technical director Pascal Vasselon. “We are not doing more than what a clever F1 system is doing with the fully mechanical system. Functionally we are doing the same, so nothing new.â€Â

Corvette Racing has brought some American flavour to France by shipping 3,000 pounds of food and drinks. The crew can request whatever goes over, particularly items that are not available in France. It includes Mountain Dew, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, peanut butter and jelly and A1 steak sauce.

Kiwis hoping to make Le Mans history - Brendon Hartley is still pinching himself after an impressive start to the Le Mans weekend, which saw him set the early pace in qualifying. The Palmerston North driver was dropped back to the second row in the final session after Toyota claimed pole position. But with over 5000 kilometres of racing ahead of him that extra 10 metres shouldn't matter.

"It was very special, I didn't expect it to be honest," says Hartley.

This will be Hartley's third Le Mans, but his first real chance to follow in the footsteps of the only Kiwis to win the race - Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon, nearly half a century ago.

Kazuki Nakajima gave Toyota pole position for the Le Mans 24 Hours as the leading LMP1 cars set their fastest times of the event so far in final qualifying.

Another year I wont make le mans dispite this year even being in the correct country!

I have been twice in recent years and it truely is an amazing event to behold.

I will where possible be listening to the live stream from Radio Le Mans.

Anyone who has been will understand the vibrations in the chest as a corvette V8 goes past...

OK, we lost the #3 Audi in the incident.

#8 Toytoa, which also was involved, managed to limp to the pits, but is still being repaired.

#7 Toyota also managed to limp to the pits, after it took out a tyre wall in the chicane, but is apparently back in the race.

So, out are (as of 17:30 CET, 35 laps):

#0   NISSAN ZEOD RC (5 laps)

#37 ORECA 03R - NISSAN (9 laps)

#81 FERRARI 458 ITALIA (22 laps)

#3   AUDI R18 E-TRON QUATTRO (25 laps)

Anyone still watching this? Going to be an interesting last couple of hours...

Died in the early hours of the morning I believe. Had my hopes up for Porsche but not to be. Still, if any Audi deserves to win its the No1 car.

OK, I caught up a little.

#7 out because of electrickery.

Now one of the Porsches in the garage and likely not coming out again.

So looks like a 1-2 for Audi again, although the race isn't over yet, mind.

Fair play to Porsche for getting #14 back out to cross the line. I reckon next year will be a good one.

Posted

I bet next year will be better.

I'm impressed by the Ferrari winning the warmed-over street car class.

Let's start a rumour and say they'll bring a P1 next year?

The Corvettes were ace. OK, they didn't win either class, but they ran like clockworks all the time.

Also, they are shite.
