Question for MOT testers..

Recommended Posts

I am looking at a set of goodridge brake hoses for wifey's fiesta.

The are advertised as having zinc fittings.

This does not say whether they are just plated or otherwise.

Would these get through an MOT? Reason I ask is that lots of motorcycle owners get caught out at MOT time because the braided hoses they have fitted to their bikes have aluminium fittings.

Answers on a postcard.

Won't Duct tape do? You need to be careful otherwise you'll be incerasing the value of the Fester and that is against Autoshite rules!

This can be offset by adding a dent or breaking something else

I would just like it stop in a fashion - a few times i have considered opening the door and putting my right foot out while braking.

I don't think braided hoses will make much of a difference to stopping.

Presuming the brakes are bled properly and the friction bits are decent, the next logical step would be to pay a visit to the local scrappy and steal the larger front discs/calipers from a more upmarket Fester.

The material from which the hoses and fittings are made from isn't mentioned in the testers manual and I can't see any mention of it in the bike testing manual either.  As long as the hoses meet the requirements I can't see them being a problem.  It certainly wouldn't occur to me to attempt to find a fail for them due to them being braided hoses.

I have heard of braided hoses being failed because the braid "prevents inspection of the hose"

This is clearly bollocks and as likely to be urban myth as it is to be over-zealous tester.

you no get a firmer peddle/less travel with braided hoses as they don't expand like rubber ones.

I have fitted them to a few of my cars and they do improve matters.

The fiesta's brakes pass the MOT but they have little stopping power - single piston callipers and drums on the back.
