Kay Petre at Brooklands, March 1938. It was the first time at Brooklands since a terrible accident the previous September. During practice for the 500 Mile race, the driver Reg Parnell misjudged an overtaking move, lost speed, slid down the banking and hit her Austin Seven from behind. She crashed badly and was seriously injured and she never raced competitively again. Years later Petre ended up designing fabric patterns for the interior of the Mini and was a motoring journalist. She died in 1994, at the age of ninety-one.

Baronesse Ewy and Ursula Wirth (the wife of my father's boss back then) in the process of winning the '63 Monte Ladies Cup.

Like Eugen Böhringer, they had to hire the Benz works racers. You read right. Due to German federal tax laws, driving a road registered factory car was considered a monetary advantage and thus liable to income tax. The workaround was, that the drivers signed a car hire contract with the factory. The hire cost was 1 Deutschmark per event.

 

Note the cut away bumper overriders to make space for the driving lights. Good replacements will set you back 200 quid a toss today.

This is Eugen Böhringer, likely lending advice to the ladies at the '64 Argentinian GP. He went on to win the event with co-driver Klaus Kaiser

at an average of over 181 kph, no mean feat when one looks at the pics.

Second ahead of the ladies was Dieter Glemser and Martin Braungart, making this a 1-2-3 hat trick for Mercedes.
