Getting Car Insurance for a trip home to the Uk

Recommended Posts

I am heading back home to Scotland for approx five weeks and will need wheels whilst I am there. If I was to hire a car, it is likely to cost me at least 800 notes. I was therefore thinking about hopefully getting a mate to buy something with a bit of T & T on it for approx a grand. It could then be sold again when I leave. The question is how easily would I be able to get insured? Anyone had any experience in this?

Can a mate/family put you on his insurance for a  short while? You can get 28 days insurance from many places too; not sure about how cost effective it is.

Hi,

I  am doing something similar and found one insurer (insure2drive.co.uk) who have the clause below so you can cancel an annual policy after before two months get a 72% - £25 refund.  It works out cheaper then the "short trem"  insurance for a two month period.   (I don't work for them)

Can my contract be cancelled?

The policy may be cancelled midterm in the following circumstances:

We may notify you of our intention to cancel your Policy in writing or via email subject to no claim arising within the current period of insurance, we will give a return of premium for the unexpired portion of the Policy based on our cancellation scales below or you may cancel the Policy in writing at any time providing you return all Certificates of Motor Insurance. In accordance with The Motor Vehicles Order 2010 (Electronic Communication of Certificates of Insurance), you are authorised to notify us, via email, of your intention to cancel the policy, acknowledging that the Certificate of Insurance has ceased to have effect from the appropriate time and date. Subject to no claim arising in the current period of insurance, we will give a return of premium for the unexpired portion of the Policy, which will be calculated using the following scale and a £25 charge will also be applied where full payment has been made by debit or credit card. For example, if the annual premium is £365 and the policy is on cover for 90 days, the return premium will be calculated as follows

: £365 -131.40 -£25 = £208.60:

Period of cover up to Premium Payable

One Month 20%

Two Months 28%

Three Months 36%

Four Months 44%

Five Months 52%

Six Months 60%

Seven Months 68%

Eight Months 76%

Nine Months 84%

Ten Months 92%

Above Ten Months 100%

During the 14 day Cooling Off period, premiums for any additional products purchased, such as Legal Expenses and Breakdown Cover, will be fully refunded subject to no claim occurring against those products. After the 14 day Cooling Off period has expired no premium will be refunded. ""
