Peugeot 406 petrol 'silver top'

I thought I knew a bit about 406s but I'm confused about these 406 petrol 2.0 litre petrols which came out with the 'silver top' engine around 1999.

We all know the older 406s in most guises are pretty worthless, but these particular ones always fetch serious money, sometimes even more than the diesels, and the sellers always seem to broadcast the fact they've got this particular engine in the ad.  One's just gone up on ebay and it's reached nearly a grand after a day.

What's going on here?  Is the engine made of gold?

I'd assume this is the HPi (high pressure injection) engine, more common in C5s of the same era. No idea why they'd be sought after, the engine is nothing but a malady-riddled crock like the majority of PSA engines post 1996*.

*I've owned enough to know! We had a C5 HPi as a pool car, and it defined 'Friday afternoon car'.

No it's not the HPi, which I know was a high maintenance flop, it's actually the same engine as used in the 206 GTI.  Perhaps twosmoke has the answer with the exports.

That's what my limited google suggested..I'd wager the silver top is the 180bhp engine from the 206gti..

The silver top engine is popular in Zimbabwe in both 1.8 and 2.0 flavour.

I think there were two versions of the 2 litre, the normal one which may indeed be same as 206 gti and the hpi version as above. I believe the hpi was really economical version. But they are more problematic too.
