Don't ring Holly (tales of new shit)

I had a rental car with a full tank: "and you can bring it back with as little as you like, empty even" in Chicago in 2005.  Two weeks and 3600 miles later I pushed it onto the lot, dry as Nevada.  The girl checking the returns couldn't believe it.  "We always tell people that, but I've never known anyone do it!"

They're probably still talking about the mad Englishman who had the green convertible...

the hire car thing reminds me of this :D

A bit of a hitch

Tuesday the 5th of May was the original docking date for the Tarago. But a phone call to the customs clearance agent reveals that the two day delay has now become a four day one and that means that unloading won't take place until after the weekend.

This is a big spanner in the works so a re-work is needed. The hotel desk informs me that there is a car rental station across the road (it's a big six lane road) so I head over there and make arrangements to pick a car up for a week. After that I phone Sileshi up and head into town to buy a mobile phone and have a mooch around.

The plan is to do a proper road trip down to Cape Canaveral see a few rockets then head straight back. Just under 2000 miles in 5 days. Shouldn't be too bad...

If the customs agent phones me and needs me back then that could be a bit dodgy depending where I am but I don't want to spend 5 or six days in one place.

Every cloud has a silver lining. In this case I can learn driving here (which is a bit different) from inside a tin box and the bike tyres will remain in good nick for the trip to Nashville.

(he shipped his bike to america and it was late then took ages to clear customs so he decided to drive from baltimore to florida..........

this is when he gave it back after just under a week :D

The Saga of the missing Mutt

Well it's off the ship but it isn't going much further. Not this week anyway. It's now in the hands of the US Customs who 'have a schedule'. "Can I talk to them, beg them,"
"No sir that would not be wise"

Car hire extended one week and me and the little black Focus are heading out West to the Appalachian Mountains. Road trip number two. Enterprise car rentals are gems. I pop in to extend the rental and the nice assistant who rented the car comes over and shakes my hand.
"Are you enjoying yourself sir?"
"Oh yes, I've been to Florida and back!"

The room of assistants nearly faint!
"FLORIDA!!"
"Yep. Erm there isn't a mileage limitation is there"
"Yes sir there is. We have a two state policy - anything more than that and we normally charge 25cents per mile, but since we didn't tell you we won't charge you - have a nice day"
Phew!!

If i was to buy one I'd get the 1.0 3 cyl turbo model with 125 bhp, they really do fly and drive really nice.

That's what I've got and I hate it!

This is how you market a car to THE YOUNG ONES these days. A lad on my course wants a DS3 for his first car "because it reminds me of my favourite Vans".

Nope, the DS3 looks nothing like a Sherpa.

Last time I hired a car it was on holiday abroad. The price seemed fair, but on collecting the keys we were charged for a full tank of fuel (you bring it back empty and they fill it). Fair enough, but the price they charged for the tank was 50% more than a complete fill to capacity from dry! Plus, I bet the people who only rented it for a short period never even got close to empty, especially on a small island. This made me angry.

So,I made damn certain I got my money's worth. Drove the last 60 miles with the gauge on empty and the warning light on, much to the displeasure of my wife as any significant delay would have caused us to miss the plane. Once we were within sight (and walking distance!) of the airport though, that was it. Headlights, HRW, AC all on, handbrake up a couple of notches and full throttle to the red line with every gear change. Even left it idling while we unpacked the bags, but to my annoyance it didn't run dry. Still, made me feel better and I certainly wouldn't ever worry about accidentally running out of fuel in a Mk6 Fiesta...

This sounds like the exact same plan I would have in that situation, but my story would probably end with a conked out car 10 miles from the rental place and a fucked off missus bollocking me for driving like a twat!
