CheeRS.

£75 plus postage, mate. Which I'm sure you will agree is a right deal, for such a top job on a steering wheel.

Seeing as it was such a nice day, I've been paintin'

Already had some stuff in stock, luckily

20140415_190539_zpsf005419b.jpg

Not enough, though. So off to Halfords we go. Even thanks to my mate, the manager and his 25% discount, the bill for this rubbish still made me wince.

20140415_185459_zpsde9949c0.jpg

Cleaned everything with acentone, then three coats of etch primer and three coats of satin black, on the steering boss, wiper arms, seat belt rails, handbrake, mirror bases, tow eyes, rear quarter window brackets, a few fasteners and the rear quarter window bolts - these are brand new, but had not been primed and the satin black paint was just falling off.

Everything has come out well, but I am most pleased with the transformation of the steering boss. As can be seen, it was quite faded in places. Shiny new paint, along with the refurbished wheel should improve things no end.

20140414_200331_zps6e8e7fd6.jpg

Gave the pedal box a quick tart up and fitted new rubbers.

20140415_184320_zpsc88becbc.jpg

20140415_185328_zpsa3ff5459.jpg

Faded door pockets and hockey stick trims and wrong coloured sunroof handle surround (I smashed the original, when removing the original handle).

20140415_161403_zps4ebe7d39.jpg

20140415_192105_zps6ad5fb54.jpg

Gave these three coats of plastic primer and three coats of Rover Hurricane Grey. This looks to be a superb match for the ford interior colour of Shark Grey. Even if it's not a perfect match, it beats faded and odd coloured stuff.

Had the beads broken and prepped the wheels, ready for paint, tomorrow.

20140415_210401_zps0df483c8.jpg

These are the original wheels, but unfortunately they have been diamond cut in the past and as such, have no part number on the spoke, now.

This is just to tidy them up, anyway, as they aren't in bad nick, just are a very dull silver.

"Nice car mate. Used to have one just like it. What is it? an old Fiesta?"

I bought the wrong paint, yesterday. Stardust Silver instead of Moondust.

I can't be certain what Stardust looks like, so decided not to risk it. Ideally, I wanted Strato, but they only had two cans and it is almost identical to Moondust, anyway.

It took ages for the till to accept the exchange. Then I made made a bit of a mess, by using acetone to clean up the surface for painting and actually started removing the paint.

As a result, I now also have paint on my side walls.

Plus the masking tape wouldn't stick to the side walls, thanks to using tyre black. So I resorted to 2" insulation tape, first.

Acetone mess and evidence of original part number, that should stand proud.

20140416_112909_zps9ef8fe7d.jpg

Paint runs on tyre walls - acetone will remove this. :/

20140416_121332_zpsdb7e357f.jpg

Etch primer

20140416_150056_zps4696073e.jpg

Grey primer

20140416_152945_zps8f56b71b.jpg

Top coat

20140416_165131_zps6f25c442.jpg

After an attempted two coats of lacquer. Fucking wind.

20140416_180712_zpsc799a530.jpg

Hopefully the wind is calmer, tomorrow and I can get them lacquered, properly.

That said, it is supposedly going to rain.

That is the reason I held off until mid-afternoon. Incase it rained.

20140416_122438_zpsef13addb.jpg

Gave the centre caps some plastic primer and top coat, too

20140416_123739_zpsf0592905.jpg

20140416_180852_zps97ca5d0c.jpg

The wheels won't be great, as I haven't gone to great lengths. I just want them a decent shade of silver and to look presentable.

I plan to have a proper refurb done at some stage (probs net winter) - I need to find some rims that are still circular, first.

I was planning to do more stuff, this eve but now I CBA and I think I will watch Sunderland get their pants pulled down by Man City, instead.

Oh yeah, I also left the hammer weight on, because I thought overpainting it would be slightly better than another low point in the paint/damage to the lip. Maybe I was wrong.

Cheers, dude.

I usually get a decent finish from them. Obviously it helps to be away from the elements. Shame there's a car in the way...

EXTREME CLOSEUP Wooooaaaahhhh

20140416_153002_zpsb64b59ce.jpg

Shame I am such a gyppo that I don't flat back, between coats.

Also, this is the first time I have painted wheels like a pikey. Never again. It's more fuck on than it's worth, masking the tyres and valves up. Especially when I am just doing the front face of the wheels.

Love the wheel my 4 spoke for the 3dr will be going for the same treatment. Thanks for the pics.

Good work overrun, I love the tarty little bits that set a car off

Philsford you can't just mention a 3 door without pictures, get some up, get some up now :-)

Nice job on the trim and quite inspiring as I have been mulling over doing the same in the Sierra. Some of the interior trim is going quite odd, such as the b-pillar trim sections which actually appear to crumbling! You can literally scratch away at it with your thumbnail and it just comes away in a whitish powder. Very odd!

Cheers fp. I am the same, anything that improves the car is welcome in my book.

I second the 3dr request. :)

Some of the plastics etc in 80s era Fords were definitley not intended to last this long - RSi washer bottle, I mean you - sounds like you may need to make a trip to the scrappy for some trim pieces, laser?

The Millhouse) scrappy, just off the A1 at Birtley/Eighton Banks, had a couple of Sierra's in, when I was last there.

What colour are your plastics, same as mine?

Lol at fordperv. I can post pics of it but it's not a very autoshite model if you see what I mean. Also I am 150 miles away from my laptop where such niceties are saved.

Refitted some painted stuff today and cleaned some stuff. No real pics, except for a door.

These looked manky and faded, before.

My mate came over and we put a shift in, fitting the dash, with a hammer. Truely a two-man job.

Cheers again, Steve.

Changed the blower vents for a better condition set

Shame the dash is manky grey and shitty blue (mk1 Orion). It isn't very cracked though, hence the reason I removed it in the scrap yard.

I wish I had painted it, now, but I want to drive the car, not spend forever working on it.

I will sort it or another one. Just not right now. This one is presentable and that will do. Besides, the blue part isn't too noticeable, really.

The dash fought us all the way.

A combination of awkward blower ducting, wiring in the way or not reaching (I re-wrapped the loom and tied it up out of the way and as expected, some wasn't ideal), a crazy steering column, having to remove the column from the rack (I forgot to refit the clamp, when I removed the rack, the other week) as well as the ancient dash design with its daft switches and shrouds, all made for a fun* evening.

Still, it's in now and I am pleased. Shame about the dent in my steering wheel, but it isn't too noticeable from other angles and safe to say, along with the fresh boss, it shows the dash right up.

It doesn't matter, I'm sure the guys on here will appreciate it's beauty and the fact it's a 27-28 year old car that stands out in everyday life and can still more than upset bmw and Audi toss pots if you tickle the loud pedal, I still say pictures please (see I've used my manners now)

Looking good overrun, the starting is definitely paying off she's looking fresh

I had a broken seat tilt lever and seem to have lost the other.

I looked in my spares and I had nothing that was a straight fit. Odd, given that I stripped down a set of RS1600i seats and kept everything that was spare.

20140418_132418_zps8047a3c8.jpg

The seats are manufactured by Scheel and apparently the levers are specific to this seat.

Burton Power sell new levers for £30 each, but I am not in a hurry to buy those.

So, out with the file.

20140418_133740_zps84b1630e.jpg

That'll do, Pig. That'll do.

Dunno what the levers are from. To me, they look like one type of Scheel lever, but who knows?

I re-painted the feet on the subframe and the rear squab brackets, too.

Also had a go at touching up the seat belts, as they let the side down, somewhat.

20140418_122642_zps940e8981.jpg

20140418_122137_zpsbcba2d37.jpg

Let's see how long that lasts...

Don't get me wrong, I don't bodge this car, just stuff like this, imo a quick tart up is better than rust, although it is far from ideal.

Handbrake was a bit rusty, before. Most seemed to be from damage to the paint.

It looks fine now.

Carpet, centre console, seats and belts back in.

The trim is blue rather like the lower dash in your RS by the looks of it. Thanks for the tip on the scrappy I'm literally just up the road from Birtley - and on holiday this week! -  so may take a wander down there! :)

Damn my blue dash!

No probs, I thought you were over that way. I think I asked if you were from Washington, as pics of your car reminded me of Lambton.

I undersealed the shit out of one arch before, seeing as the old stuff was faded. Ideally, I would use Gravitex or something, but it's already got this stuff on and it's there to be driven. I need another tin to do the other front.

20140418_174147_zpse0a4bd92.jpg

The arch lip is on my do to list. The car had blown dampers when I got it and there has been tyre-arch contact.

Ok guys here are a few of pics. Hope you don't mind them on here overun as I don't really want a thread on it as apart from a service I have no plans for it.

Thanks. Yea they are calibre wheels. 9x17 at the rear 8x17 at the front. I also hate how the rear wheels sit on these which is made far worse with standard wheels. I am on the look out for some standard ones just so I have them, but would only fit them to sell the car as everyone seems to want them standard.

Posted

how does it drive with 8s on the front what sort of offset you running? i ended up going for the lenso bsx 7.5 front and 8.5 rear but got them drilled and machined from blanks to my required offset the offsets in 4x108 they offer are terrible and would've needed huge spacers to look right, did you get any problems on the front covering your brakes my fronts had to be et17 but thats because i have 330mm brakes if i had standard cosworth 4 pots i would've got away with et25

my 3 door isnt genuine though  :-(

That's stunning, Phil. I like how the wheels are like an improved version of the originals.

More element protection shennigans this morning.

I have only had to wire brush and clean it up in a couple of places on the fronts. I will do the floorpans and rest of chassis, tomorrow.

I helped a mate with his cars, this afternoon.

One promised bacon, yet yielded nothing. Maybe it was empty?

It's fully waxoyled, now. What a fun* job that was and my hands and forearms came clean with ease*.

On the upside, it looks a lot better than the faded stuff that was on there, so that's super-duper.

Fitted some more interior fittings, steering column clamp and pinch bolt and a correct length M12 bolt for the gear linkage reaction rod - since fitting the Puma linkage, I have been running a 140mm long jobber with some fat spacers.

Cut down and fitted the new door weather strips. Not a job I was looking forward to, but they have turned out fine and look much better than the warped items that were previously fitted.

That's as good as everything done, now, aside from re-fitting the rear quarter windows (need mates help with that, ideally), the wheels (having another mate lacquer them, hopefully this weekend) and some under-bonnet cleaning.

Boring stuff my arse! This is coming along really quickly  :-)

Cheers, fella. I am loving the sunshine atm. I wish it was May, so I go and kick it's head in! :)

Car's all sorted, done the last few little jobs yesterday and as of today I am taxed and allowed back on the road.

Shame it's pissing down.

I decided to just apply more rattle can lacquer to the wheels (indoors), as I am not happy with them, anyway.

I really need to find two, preferably three early RS1600i wheels so I can have a set acid dipped and sprayed Strato Silver - I will keep looking.

For now though, this is it.

20140430_161704_zps13d0bf40.jpg

Not very glossy, but then the factory finish isn't, really. So hopefully they don't look too bad, outside.

New centre cap stickers look better than the nictonie hue of old.

20140415_183751_zps69dfefc3.jpg

Here's how they used to look. See how they were darker than the vinyl stripes?

IMAG0104_zpse288b460.jpg

And here's how the car once stood. The wheels were great, here. It even had Dunlop D4's, still.

DSCF0014_zpsf40981ef.jpg

Ironically, everything but the wheels are better on it, now. But as we all know, the wheels make the car!

I will sort this, as imo it will lift the look of the car some more.

It has been off the road for three months and on axle stands for two, as planned and I have done everything on my lists, aside from some items I would like, rather than need. Such as an XR4i TB, new wheels, full grey dash etc.

This is balanced out by me adding and doing things that were not originally planned, though.

For now though, I want some sunshine! Luckily tomorrow is another day. :D
